Which Trip Planning software for 2016?
« on: April 07, 2016, 03:53:02 pm »
Which trip planning software do you plan on using for 2016?

What about route planning?

I have been using Trips and streets 2013 and really like it but it is not being updated anymore. I am not happy using google maps or earth for planning more than going from point A to point B. Apple maps are not any better.

I have been using the Alstays app on my iPad for years.  Using this with a good gps such as the Garmin 660 and you can trip plan anywhere.

I use MAPQUEST (www.mapquest.com) for most of my trip planning.   It provides a great Interstate/Highway overview for general planning and then you can select very detailed views with excellent satellite pictures for very precise study.

Golly, you folks make me feel old fashioned :beg!   I love to buy a new atlas every year or two and use it along with my most favorite trip planning tool:  official state maps available at most welcome points on major highways entering our states.   I just enjoy the look and feel of maps.  I have a collection of maps in our library and I enjoy looking at fifty and thirty year old maps of the US and seeing how things have changed.   It makes me attentive to and appreciative of progress.

OK, I will "fess up".  I do use google maps (the new version is inferior to the older ones IMO), google earth, a complete set of DeLorme topo maps on my desktop, IPad and laptop, the GPS on my IPhone, a Garmin GPS in the Phoenix Cruiser and a few apps to find dump stations, campgrounds, etc.

All that is nice and fun, but nothing for me takes the place of a good map with all its color and character...and coffee stains from planning and looking forward to the journey.

Paul, we have all the electronic mapping toys and having a program calculate the distance and time it takes to travel a given distance is awesome. but the paper Atlas rides in the seat pocket wherever we go and the dog eared pages tell the tale of its use. Many places we go don't have signal so the paper map is all that works at that point. However, I LOVE topographic maps and check them out whenever the parks have them. We restrict ourselves to buying them ONLY if we are doing extensive hiking in a given area so I usually have to love them and then leave them at the visitors centers we pass through.

Tom:

I think the DeLorme Street Atlas software is similar to the Microsoft Streets and Trips software.

We almost exclusively use Google Maps and Allstays for trip planning (along with our GPS to ensure the route doesn't  take us under low overpasses/bridges, etc). We like being able to easily switch between map view, satellite view and street view in Google Maps as well as easily see alternate routes.

Some others we've tried...

The Roadtrippers app does a pretty good job of showing lots of interesting things along your route, but not great for mapping and routing.

The Waze app does turn by turn nav, but it's big draw are the community-based aspects of the program, showing traffic, accidents, speed traps, good gas prices, etc that are reported by others in the area and on the road at the time.  It also provides alternate routes depending on traffic conditions.

I plan on trying out an interesting app called InRoute this week.  It looks to be more route-based (with alternate routing and multi-point waypoint routing).

I always keep an eye on the Technomadia site which is run by tech-savvy bloggers who have been full timing in RV's since around 2005 I think (www.technomadia.com). They usually list good RV-related software and apps for all kinds of things.

Another thing we learned on our last trip to FL is to keep the GPS and CB on at all times and have your PAPER MAPS ready.

We were headed I 75 north in FL when the traffic sign informed us of an accident 20 miles north - right lane blocked.  We got 15 1/2 miles when the traffic stopped completely.  Truckers were telling others a route to avoid the traffic jam.  Luckily we were just a few feet from the last exit prior to the accident that was still 5 miles north.  The GPS saved us from at least an hour delay.  We asked for a 5 mile detour and it routed us beautifully, back on I 75 just north of the accident. Took us about 10 minutes.

We were able to confirm the detour on our maps -- did not want to get GPSd. Truckers went the opposite way and had about a 10 mile detour.

Yes, all the gadgets are fine, but always have a Rand McNally as a back-up when service goes down.  We get into trouble once in a while relying solely electronic.

But the big USA Rand McNally has let us down too.  It does not cover the area north of San Francisco.  I picked up THESE MAPS when visiting the area, kept them clean, scanned them at home, and made them available to the general public......and for us too when out there.

I also recall a disappointment using the Rand McNally a long time ago when travelling through Death Valley, but I don't remember what the trouble was.

We have a Garmin RV760 GPS which came with Lifetime Map Updates. I also have the map on my Macbook and use it with Garmin's Basecamp software. For trip planning I use Basecamp and the GoodSam camping guide. I build a route for each day we want to be traveling ending that day's route at whatever mileage we want to do (usually less than 250 miles). Then I find camping in the GoodSam book near the end of the route.

Warning, Basecamp is not for cowards. It is complex and not user friendly. I'm a retired computer guy so I took it as a challenge to learn it and now I do well with it. Just saying.

We also depend on Allstays.  We also find " Inroute" great for time and distant planning.

When traveling in the wild west (we live in Colorado), electronic gadgets do not work a lot of the time. We are never without paper maps--an atlas and frequent stops at AAA along the way to get detailed city/area maps. We had a Garmin GPS with lifetime updates, but it ran out of memory. Now we just use the GPS on the iPhone when there is a signal. Check what your plan coverage is (phone or tablet) in various states and Canada. I am on Sprint and had a BIG problem in Montana last fall. Sprint had pulled all their towers in that state (long story). Roaming worked, but that blew through data bites like you would not believe when using the GPS.

We also have a Garmin GPS with lifetime updates but as you implied, you have to download the maps by area. When we were touring the Vicksburg, MS area, we spent some time in a campground across the river in Louisiana. As we crossed the bridge over the Mississippi, the Garmen blanked out and showed only the main highway and a couple larger city names. We thought it broke but eventually figured out we had crossed the Map downloaded/No map downloaded line. Since the next area was a huge download, we couldn't afford the data hit AND we weren't planning to stay in Louisiana long, so we reverted to paper maps and spent some time lost wandering back roads of Louisiana. Granted we had gone off the beaten trail to visit the Poverty Point Indian Mounds so we were on quite a few farm country roads out there but we eventually made it back to camp. We played Gypsy at my son's house and used his unlimited internet to download the maps so we will be good to go next time. We bought a memory card for the Garmin so it can hold more maps.

I used to have a Garmin with only 2G of memory so I had to install an SD card to hold the maps. The update process was challenging. Our RV760 has 7G of memory so I can load the whole North American map with room to spare.
