Factory Visit and Stabilizer Question
« on: April 02, 2016, 12:17:43 pm »
I recently visited the PC factory for a tour.  It was good seeing the units in various stages of construction.  I was impressed with the experience and knowledge of the people assembling the units and their willingness to answer questions.  Thus I got many of my questions answered that I need before making some decisions.

Earl allowed me to take one of the units for a short test drive.  My prior experience has always been with travel trailers and I wasn't real sure of what to expect.  My impressions were the 2552 appeared to provide a comfortable ride and once up to speed it was relatively quiet.  The turning radius was longer than my 1/2 pickup which is to be expected with the 8-9' longer length.  The day I took the drive there was some wind gust probably in the 30 mph range.  When in cross wind and traveling at about 55 mph I did notice more of a need to make steering corrections.  I would not call it bad but noticeable.  I did not drive on the interstate with tractor trailers passing to experience how that might impact stability.  Earl told me they offered a "Safety Plus Stabilizer" for $639 that would reduce the need for steering correction.    I suspect since I am not use to driving this type vehicle it may be something you later on don't pay any attention to.  I have read on this forum Ford has made some changes to their later models that addressed stability.

My question (particularly to those that have driven the newer units) is this option really worthwhile or did I just experience unusually windy/gusty conditions that normally is not an issue?  For those that have the Safety Plus option did it make a significant improvement to the drive ability of the PC?

Fred,

We have the 2012 2551.  We did not have to do anything to the unit for me to feel comfortable driving it.  In fact, compared to our 2008 2350, it drives very nice.  On the 2350 (E350) I added a trac bar because the back end always seemed to be swaying.  That took care of the problem.

One thing that does make a difference is how much you load it.  It seems the heavier the load the easier to drive.  I do notice in very windy conditions that I may have to make some slight steering corrections.  Truck/trailers are very seldom felt but depending on the shape of some motorhomes I do feel them.

Our shocks needed replacing after 22,000 miles and our ride is much better now with new shocks.

My 2012 2552 on E450 chassis drives great in the wind without any modifications.

Way better than an old square sided class A I had, that was scary.

I put Bilstein heavy duty shocks on my 2012 2552 and they helped a lot. I also put the Blue Ox steering bar on and it helped a little more. I think the safe-t-plus would help even more. You must remeber that you are driving a large wind catcher and some correction will always be needed. You should of notice the trailer moving around behind you in strong winds.

The only issue I have heard of about the safe-t-plus is that it has to be adjusted for the type of road you are driving on in your area, ie the crown in the road. It it is set for a flat highway then driven on two lane back roads, you will be turning to the left all the time. Safe-t-plus has a web site with great videos about their product and how they should be installed.

Hi fandj,

Our 2007 2350 on a 2007 E350 chassis has a Safe-T-Plus which is now 9 years old with 30,000 miles of use and all continues to be fine with it.  It was one of many upgrades done on the original suspension with less than 1000 miles when the rig was almost new.  Because the changes were made in one visit to a shop, I cannot say what each upgrade did on it's own.  I can say that everything works together like a beautiful symphony.

It is hard to describe what the Safe-T-Plus itself is doing on it's own.  Trying to describe it, it seems to provide additional resistance in the steering wheel, but only when going straight to help you stay straight....yet it's more than that.  Maybe one of the other Safe-T-Plus owners will take a stab at describing it.

One thing certain, the Safe-T-Plus is expensive.  No getting around that.

Fandj,
We've posted on our experience with adding the Safe-T-Plus previously (copied below).  After almost three years, we feel the same way on the topic:

After traveling in our 2014 Model 2552 for several weeks, we want to report how happy we are with our decision to buy it.  Living in it is a pleasure and driving it is fairly easy.  The ride is comfortable enough and not at all the “truck-like” feeling that we anticipated.

We did experience some “wandering” of the coach while driving on the freeway that was bothersome in keeping the vehicle going in a straight line due to the many minor steering wheel adjustments required.  This was something we could live with, but hoped could be improved.

We wanted an expert opinion on the handling and wheel alignment to see if even minor improvements could be made.  So, we had Henderson’s Line-up in Grants Pass, Oregon do their Road Performance Assessment with us.  They describe this as “a systematic, diagnostic 15-mile road test that reveals steering and suspension problems over a variety of road surfaces.”

The report we received (both verbal and written) was very encouraging.  They feel that no improvement was needed in suspension, braking, or weight distribution.  They did suggest that we install a Safe-T-Plus unit and check the alignment of all wheels.

The reason for the Safe-T-Plus is to improve the tracking under normal circumstances and to provide safety in situations such as a blowout, a sudden gust of wind from a passing truck, or a pothole in the road.  It is a steering control device that will automatically stabilize the vehicle.

We followed both of the recommendations.  Only minor adjustments were needed in the front wheel alignment and none for the rear wheels.  The Safe-T-Plus definitely eliminated most of the wandering and gives us more confidence while driving.

The peace of mind we enjoy now justifies the cost involved.

Hope this helps you make your decision,
Bruce and Sharon

I have a 2016 2351 on an F-450 chassis. I have a Safe-t-steer and a trac bar from a previous unit. I have found no reason to install either on the new PC. It does not sway nor wander and is very stable. The ride is very good (for a F450)

Thanks all for your responses.   They were reassuring.  My current travel trailer is small and is only about 9' high, aerodynamic, and with weight distribution and sway control there is very seldom any noticeable lateral movement due to cross winds and tractor and trailers.  I also may have been conditioned to the movement and don't notice it.  I suspect if if I was moving down from a class A rather than moving up from a smaller unit I probably would not have even noticed it.

I would not characterize my cross wind movement in the PC anything approaching a "white knuckle" experience.  I felt it was noticeable and if anything raised the question of Interstate speeds and the tractor trailer buffeting magnitude.

Should I order a unit I will follow the advise obove including proper loading. Also will insure proper tire inflation.  I suspect with a few miles of driving experience the minor lateral movement will go unnoticed.  Should it become more of an issue I will certainly look into better shocks and stabilizers to minimize the problem.

I have a 2014 2552 with Safe-T-Plus and my experience is similar to Ron's and Bruce's....and Tom's comments are correct.

While my experiences were definitely not 'white knuckle' without the unit installed, it was really nice to have on long trips with long periods of high wind conditions.

As Tom said, you should watch the videos on their website.  They also show what happens during a tire blowout with and without Safe-T-Plus installed.

Had a 2100 and added the  safety plus.  Now have a 2552, two years old and feel no need for the safety plus even after driving from Nashville through the Utah national parks last year.  That said, there is nothing like peace of mind for blow outs.  After I get some wear on the suspension I will likely add a safety plus.  Happy driving to you.
