AC not cooling
« on: December 25, 2015, 08:08:34 am »
Our AC is not putting cold air out. I have tried setting the thermostat to all three options, low fan speed high and auto. The outside temperature this morning is 70 degrees the temperature inside is 79. We had the temp inside set to 68 however it never cooled to below 79.

The air coming out of the unit seems to be the same temp as outside....definitely does not feel like AC air?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Merry Christmas,
Dave

Dave:

Could be many things....some more likely than others; however, when I had an issue with our a/c it turned out to be a loose wire nut in the control section of the rooftop unit.

Other possibilities include:

- iced up due to fan not working or a clogged filter/fins
- lack of freon (leak somewhere?)
- bad/stuck compressor
- burned out component like a capacitor
- frozen/stuck reversing valve (if your unit is a heat pump)
- a/c compressors use a lot of power, especially on startup....are you on generator or shore power?

I would take a quick look at the rooftop unit and see if there is any obvious problem (burned areas, loose wires, unusual noises)

Many a/c problems can be identified with a volt-ohmmeter and a troubleshooting guide, if you have access to those.

The good news is that an RV a/c unit is like any other and any HVAC company can help you out.

Strange problem to have on Christmas!  Happy holidays!

It's kinda nice that it failed when the outdoor temps are around 70 and you'll no doubt be heading into colder weather on the way back to PA!  Sure beats losing a/c in July in Phoenix or Havasu!

David I had the same problem with my A/C unit. A line broke and the coolant leaked out. No stain on the roof that I saw but the server guy at Camping World found it. He called Dometic and they sent a whole new roof unit under wanrrenty. You might want to check with them before trying to repair it yourself.

I hope everyone is having a Merry Christmas. :)(:

Just in case they will not warranty your unit. You may want to take some electrical tape and cover the lines where the break is. If your weather is sticky (humid) and if it rains moisture can get into the system and reak havoc. It could be the difference of just soldering the line, evacuating and recharging the system. Or having to replace the whole system later due to compressor failure.

Assuming your 2350 has  a window vent next to the bed, have you tried closing the  other windows in the coach, opening the one next to the bed and  and turning on the roof exhaust fans? This creats a very nice cool breeze across the twin beds in our 3100 PC.
