Omnidirectional TV Antenna - Anyone Have Experience?
« on: August 11, 2015, 05:22:04 pm »
I'd like an omnidirectional (no pointing required) free-air-wave digital antenna for the roof of our PC.  Does anyone here have any "positive" experience with them?

I quickly found the ones listed below (some not for RVs), but I would consider anything as long as it is PC friendly and a good performer for long-distances.  I would like to reuse the base of my old crank-up Winegard as not to disturb all the mounting holes and caulk.  Whatever I get, it must not be taller than the a/c unit or it won't clear my garage door opening.  Of coarse it also has to withstand being driven around like everything else on the roof of the PC.

1) Winegard MS-2000
2) Shakespeare Sea Watch 3020
3) Antenna Craft 5MS921
4) Channel Master CM3000
5) Terk FDTVO

I suggest you look at the Winegard Rayzar auto antenna.   It comes with parts and instructions to replace the crank up antenna.

Ron, I read some reviews on the Rayzar from Winegard, some good, some bad.  I decided to keep my current antenna and try an "aiming assistant."  I don't know much about the other omni-directional antennas.

I just swapped the antenna amplifier with a Winegard Sensarpro RFL-332 signal strength meter and amplifier.  It still requires aiming the antenna, but you can watch the signal strength while aiming, then do a channel scan.  I haven't used it on the road yet, just tried it at home and I think it will be helpful.

It is a simple install as long as you don't reverse polarity, like I did, when you first connect it!

Bob,
Had the same unit installed in my. I was out for 6 weeks and the new amp and tuner was a plus for me. Made finding stations a lot easer. If you have an Android phone get the TV Antenna Helper app. Works great and let you know what TV station you can get where you are and what direction for the antenna.

Interesting approach to the challenge.  I do have an Android Samsung S4 with 4G.  I will give it a try.  Is the app free?

I was hoping for a simple no-fuss passive antenna without moving parts.  Just turn on the TV and scan.  But trying an app to point my existing antenna is surely worth a try.

Does a passive (no moving parts) omnidirectional antenna exist, or do they have moving parts as well?  Do they perform as well as directional antennas?

If you have an iPhone or iPad, try "TV Towers USA."  I used it on my last trip and it worked well to help me point in the correct direction.  The app got me pointed in the general direction, but I discovered that in some cases, with distant antennae, a difference in only 10 degrees made a significant difference in the amount of channels I picked up when scanning, so I decided to try something with a signal strength readout, hence the Winegard SensarPro.
