Converter tripping

Hi, I haven't posted for quite some time, but I have been browsing. I have Down sized from a class A to a PC due to the loss of my husband. Which will explain more my lack of k knowledge. I totally love it!!!  The last few times I have hooked up to shore power, the main circuit breaker trips off. It never did it before. I have a 2004 Sport Limited. Two slides. But, before I can even go inside to turn anything on, the circuit breaker trips. Anyone have any thoughts on why?

Are you confident the shore power is wired correctly.

I always check polarity and if there is a ground. Many campgrounds have poor wiring. So that is where you need to start.
Buy one of these gadgets at a Hardware store of from Amazon.

If there wiring is OK, start with converter breaker off and then turn it on and see what happens.

It may be a combination of several things drawing power at the same time.  I would make sure all 120v electric devices are turned off, especially the inverter/converter and the electric portion of the water heater.  The converter and the water heater could draw a lot of power for an extended period, perhaps an hour or more.  As John mentioned turn one device on at a time and see what happens.

I have one one or two of those testers, my brother is an electrician, and has checked the boxes out, I was wondering if the converter should be off, but I didn't do that before, and we took a month trip out west with no problems. My brother said that maybe it could be the circuit breaker is weak? He has a class A and is not too familiar with this type motor home.I can try the off but I wanted to make sure it was working before we went on our shake down trip.  2o2 Thanks for the replys though. I guess I will call the factory, see if they know.

I assume you are talking about the breaker in the coach. If not some campgrounds have a fault breaker on their elec. I have had those to trip.

The best way to check is to flip all the breakers off.  Then plug into shore power.  Then go in and flip on the main breaker.  Wait a minute...iif it stays on, then flip on the other breakers one at a time  and again....wait a minute after each breaker is flipped on.

That'll narrow it down to one circuit.   Have an electrician check out that curcuit.

Hi Sue,

    When you need to reset a breaker, push it all the way to the off position before turning it back on. It may look like it is off and still move to the on position but it has not been reset unit you push it all the way off. See if this helps.

Thanks for these suggestions.when the reply about turning off all breakers came up, I happened to think that the only time this happens is when I park and the refrigerator is on propane and is probably trying to auto switch over to electric! Now what? I kinda think my breaker switch is weak? I have done all the other suggestions I always double check to make sure everything is off except the fridge which is on auto. And is on propane. Sorry I didn't get back to this message before this. Just been too busy

Hi Sue,
Our bad luck seems to coincide!  I have another thread asking about power issues and my refrigerator.  In my case I have a built-in Surge Guard that won't allow shore power to work unless I turn my refrigerator off before plugging in.  Then once the shore power is established I can turn the frig on and it will go automatically over to electric.  So ya, I guess something is up with that propane-to-electric switch...  I was going to call the Surge Guard people tomorrow, but maybe I should call the refrigerator people too.  I'll also call Phoenix.  Will share whatever I discover.  Meanwhile, try turning your frig off when hooking up and see if that gives you a temporary solution.

Ok.It will be a little while before I can try that due to delays in going on any trips yet. Our weather is not cooperating for me to go out and check things out, unfortunately. Thanks for that input. Will be watching for feed back on what PC has to say!

Hi Sue,
I spoke to Kermit today and he asked for you to call him about what is happening with your coach.  Meanwhile, I also talked to an authorized Thetford/Norcold repair tech and he said that we should always turn our refrigerator off before hooking up, then turn it on after shore power is established.  Guess I've been doing it wrong for 9 months.  Still, it's odd that things worked fine previously (the frig automatically switched from propane to electric once hooked up to shore power) and then started to get funky.  Hope you get your situation worked out.  Let us know, if you can!

Carol, I was going to call Kermit in a while. About that, if needed, and a couple other things, but I needed to gat the i NFO together first and I just haven't been able to do that yet. I do appreciate the prompt reply! PC forum is great!!! Love my PC even thoug it is 11 years old!
