Levelers being balky
« on: December 15, 2014, 10:23:17 pm »
I looked in my manual but didn't see anything about this....  When I try to use the levelers, I put the rv in park with the engine running and turn on the system. When I press the arrow for the jack I want to extend, the red light by the power button, which had been steady, blinks and the jacks don't move. I'll try it again and again, and eventually after a few minutes, the jacks will extend.  It used to be that as soon as I wanted to level it would work, this delay is a new thing.  Storing the jacks works as it always did. Any ideas?

Not sure that this answers your question, but I never have the engine running while extending the jacks.  The system might be trying to alert you not to move while extending the jacks.

I don't think the engine should be running and I believe the parking brake is supposed to be set.  On ours there is an interlock on the parking brake that keeps the levelers from deploying.

Hmm.....I'll have to go check the manual again. I could have sworn it said "ignition on"

Most of the time I leave the engine running when I extent the jacks. Only later if I need to adjust the level again, I will do so without the engine running.
Is the parking brake light on or off when this is happening? I am thinking you might have a loose wire or ground wire or the brake is not setting on. The jacks system requires the brake to be on.

Ignition must be "on"  as in the "accessory" position but not with engine running. Parking  brake must be fully set.  I see no reason to have the engine running and I personnally would not want it running for safety reasons when the jacks were being deployed.  I honestly do not think there is anything wrong with your jacks.   Might be a good idea as suggested to spray the entire jack set up to prevent corrosion.   Best of luck.

What are your "safety reasons" for not running the engine?

I had reason to call HWH once and found them to be helpful.  I find the manufacturer a good source of information for undocumented error conditions.  Here is the number for HWH support perhaps they will be able to answer all your questions.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the parking brake is set, there's a different light that shows when I forget.  I've always had the engine running when leveling as I thought the manual said so, but I see now that was just on the written notes the seller gave me.  But I've always done it that way, and I used to be able to level as soon as I turned the system on, and now there's a delay. I'll crawl under one of these days soon and see what's what....I have to reattach my hitch wiring socket somehow.  (And the leveler delay started before the hitch dragging incident so they're not related)

In regards to leaving the engine running while operating the jacks and what are the "safety concerns" as to why one should not do that...
1. I often leave the coach door open, my wife is always quick to open windows, vents, etc and i just do not like to fill the coach with engine fumes while I am setting up.
2. I like to be polite to my next door campers and always try to be as quite as possible and shutting down the engine as soon as possible  to prevent noise and exhaust from be bothersome to them, I always shut my headlights off as soon as I can if I come in at night as well.
3. The chance that the truck would jump out of park is extremely rare I grant you that but stranger things have happened and a major car manfacturer is recalling vehicles now for this exact issue so why would you want to chance something strange happening?   There must be a reason why the jack manafacturer requires the parking brake to be engaged and does not depend on just "park" being utilized before operating the jacks.   I once had a Monaco product that actaully had and intelock that prevented the jacks from working with the engine running I wonder why?
4. When gas was not $2.50 per gallon it made good sense to shut that V-10 down any chance one could get.

While my points are perhaps not all "safety" driven I hope they make sense?   Thanks, Ron
