Replaced the gas filter on our 2551,Onan 4000 generator today. Not as bad as I expected. There is a heat shield on the left side of the generator that needs to be removed and then the rubber grommet where the fuel line enters the generator.Next remove the fuel line and plug it with a 1/4" bolt, then use a deep socket wrench to remove the old filter from the fuel pump.Put a little pipe dope on the new one and install the new one.Took me 1/2 hr.

Not exactly sure when the recommended filter change is due, however I was experiencing surging of the engine and the filter change cured that.
