12 volt power outage?

12 volt power outage?

We are a few days into a trip around the southwestern states and had something happen that has me concerned.

The 12 volt power went out for about 4 seconds.  The reason I think it was just the 12 volts is that the ceiling lights and bath fan went out, but the front TV stayed on and the microwave didn't flash "press reset" as it does when 120 volt power is lost.  The RV has 23,000 miles on it and this is the first time this has happened.

I am concerned that there may be an issue with the 12 volt converter, the batteries were disconnected at the time so the 12 volts was being supplied by only the converter.  Anyone have any experience or suggestions regarding this?

   couple questions,,,   you did say  you were on converter,,,correct,,, not inverter,,,,,,, what were the  charging level lights showing at the time this happen,,, 100%   75% ets,,,   if your levels got to low the unit may have shut down or went in another mode,        if you were on converter not sure what to do,,,   inverters sometimes get  screwy and you need to  turn off everything and hit the reset button    also are you still having the problem   hopefully some others will have some suggestions

I was not on the inverter, I was on shore power with the converter supplying the 12 volts, not the batteries as they were disconnected.  This has happened only once in 23,000 miles; however, if the converter had ever failed briefly with the batteries connected I would not have noticed since the batteries would continue to supply the 12 volts.

We had a similar problem on our 2012 2551.  Turned out to be a 50 AMP breaker under the passenger bed.  The key item here was that it automatically reset after 4 or 5 seconds.  It is the only component that will auto reset.  Have not had that problem since it was replaced.  

Let me know if you need the part number and I can get it to you tomorrow morning.

Here the info on the 50A breaker:  Shortstop, 12V, U15 50A

It is auto reset thermal cycling circuit breaker.

A call to the factory should provide you with the manufacturer.
Good luck it is a simple R&R

No markings as to the manufacturer.

Barry,

I had no idea that there was an auto-reset thermal breaker in the converter.  Sounds like that may be my problem, thanks for the details on the breaker.

If the breaker has an auto restart, then I would think it was planned to trip if it over heated. Since this has only happened once, should you really be worrying about it? It seems it just did its job. The question i think is what were you running that made it over heat?

Since this has only happened once, should you really be worrying about it?

    We were never running anything when ours kept tripping and resetting.  It happened once - no big deal, it happened again, now a little concerned and then it did it quite often.  Once it was changed we have never had the problem again.

The bedroom 12v tv, three ceiling lites, and the bath fan, not near 50 amps.  I plan to get the replacement breaker and  see if and under what load it happens again before replacing it.

Also need to check into why there is a 50 amp breaker in a 60 amp panel?

Barry,

I should have read your post carefully, I see that you said it is located under the bed, not in the Xantrex converter.  I took the cover off the converter and did not see a breaker, now after rereading your post I will get under the bed to find the breaker.

I assume that the 12v breaker was added by the factory as additional protection to the individual 12v fuses in the Xantrex converter.

Not really what I would think of as a circuit breaker but this was what our problem was..

Thanks, I have seen those at RV supply stores, I will pick one up.  Saved me from dismantling the bed just to see what it looks like.
