hot water heater question

hot water heater question

this my first trip out with my 2010,2551 and the red light on the switch for the hot water heater does not lite up when turning it on. water heated ok and I heard the lighting. I also have electric to make hot water but without the light working I am not sure how long it takes and trying to save on propane by wanting to use electric. Could the light need to be replaced??   
  So used to see the lite work on my former mh. 
   
any advice???    :)

I had the same problem with my 2910 new coach... the red light did not turn on.  I read the instructions and found out that if the red light is on it means that the propane isn't "catching".  In other words, the red light is not used as an "indicator light".

The red light is only on if the propane is not working properly. 

It takes about 15 minutes for the electric to work unless you have a large block of ice on the bottom of the hot water tank, then it will take awhile longer.  I noticed that heating with the propane takes just about the same amount of time or a little less.  We use electric whenever we can.

We normally stay in campgrounds with full hookups and in the summer drive with the roof A/C on using the generator. The generator also runs the electric water heater and the refrigerator. I turn the them both on the night before we leave home while the PC is still plugged into the house. I turn them both off when we get back home. I only turn the gas on the water heater to test and clean it every now and then,  It seems we don't need the gas part of the water heater to keep hot water. Since I am paying for the electric at the campsite, why burn my propane? If I dry camped, which is very rare, I guess I would have to use more propane.

Tom - why do you find it necessary to turn the hot water heater on the night before?  We usually turn ours on when we get to our campsite and then turn it off before we leave the campground.  If we do forget to turn on the water heater it only takes about 10 - 15 minutes to heat up the water.

          We also never use the propane on the water heater unless we do not have electric.

          Just a reminder - never turn on your hot water heater if you do not have water in the hot water tank.

Just makes it one less thing to think about in the morning. On before we leave, off when we return. Refer and water heater at the same time. Wife packs refer night before.

 tymote REally appreciate all the advice. Would prefer to use electric to get hot water but wasnt sure about the red light. So now I know what it is for.  My paperwork doesn/t tell  you.
