Transfer Switch Trim Panel Attachment
« on: August 15, 2024, 02:10:01 pm »
Long back ground story, but I'm chasing an electrical issue.  The question is about the panel that covers the transfer switch right behind the driver.  Ours was held on by 2 long wood screws.  I would like to change the attachment method and wanted to see if anyone had done something similar.  I was thinking of using cabinet door magnets with the magnet secured to the panel and metal plate to the coach wall.  Minimum of two, one at each end with the ability to add additional if two aren't enough.

The reason I want to do something different is the long wood screws weren't securing it very well and the screws ultimately pulled out very easily.

Someone do something similar or use a different method?

If you think you are going to be opening/removing the cover frequently, why not use velcro?  You might need to add a block (or blocks) on the back side to align with the face of the wall in order to have facing velcro strips... But that shouldn't be difficult. Just a thought.

Fair point.  I checked with McMaster-Carr and they list all sorts of cabinet type magnets and nicely list their holding power in lb-force.  I've decided to get 4 at a 6-8 lb force and start out with two and go from there.

Yes I do think I'll be opening at least once a year to check tightness of power connections.  All the shore power and the generator power go through this one box.  I'm making a list electrical connection points to check connection tightness.  So far, I have the EMS, ATS, and main distribution / breaker panel below the passenger bed.  I haven't looked but will probably include the generator connections at the genset.  Connections loosening over time due to vibration can cause electrical issues.

I used 3M Indoor/Outdoor 10lb. Velcro adhesive (1" x 1") strips to reattach my cover.  Three points across the top and one lower front.  It leaves a tiny 1/16" gap between the wall but isn't noticeable unless you're looking for it.  Don't bother with the Command Strips as you'll need a thicker fastener to allow for the flex in the luan wallboard and leather trim.
