Windshield eyebrow
« on: March 12, 2024, 07:26:15 pm »
I got a rock chip in the center of my windshield back in November that ran about 10 inches in just 48 hours.... So no point in trying to "fix it".

I'm now searching for a new windshield and I want one with an eyebrow... You know, that gradient 4 to 6 inches across the top that is tinted?

Does anyone have this on their E350/450? Maybe there was there no factory option for it?

Did anyone find a replacement windshield with an eyebrow? or have it added?

I can find "kits" for sale that are solid tint. They start out dark at the top of the winddhield and are dark to the bottom edge... They don't transition to clear like a factory eyebrow.  To me they look too home-made.

I can also find a couple different kinds of tint in a roll that is gradient dark to clear, and I would need to cut, got, install it myself. However these kits are only sold in the UK.  I could buy one my next London trip this summer.  It overcomes the home-made look, but is still peel and stick film that eventually will look bad.

I personally would prefer the painted on permanent eyebrow and I'm hoping someone has already found a source.  My Google searches come up empty. My local glass providers could care less and just want to sell a window.

Hi Larry,

I am not trying to talk you out of the upper sunglasses across the top of the windshield.....only sharing our experience traveling in our PC.  When in the mountains, we are always looking up at scenery.  Any such windshield sunshading would hinder those views which is something to consider.

Elite Auto glass (used to be SsfeLite) has them.

Hi Don.

Coincidentally that is the one place I didn't contact. Each of their locations in Houston have terrible reviews. About 70 to 80% of their reviews are 1 star for damage to the vehicles and rain leaks.

I may need to find out where they procure windshields and find a different glass shop that can buy from the same place. Is there a brand name on your windshield?

Many thanks!
Larry

My PC is in a storage yard a few miles from here so no, I don't have the brand name.  Your insurance company should be able to assist and so should any auto glass company.  I am sure they are available from Ford, if no where else.

Thanks to each of the responsers. I always value the thoughts and input from the forum members.

I ended up avoiding the safelight shops because the bad reviews here in Houston, but after 4 of my friends recommended APPLE Glass I visited the shop in person and after a few phone calls they  found they could order the windshield I wanted.

In case anyone else is interested in this in the future...
It comes from Pilkington. I've attached 2 pics of the window stickers for parts numbers, etc. I'm not sure which is the part number and what is routing numbers.  Apple Glass said they could not find it anywhere (Ford, PPG and others) else. I had 2 choices of glass, "green" or "blue".  This refers to the general faint tint of the lower part of the windshield.  The eyebrow is always the same color (looks blue to me). I chose the faint green as most of my RV is green and the eyebrow looks black from the outside.

I've also attached a photo of the windshield before and after installation to see the tint band.

I also watched close for rust or cracks in the window frame. I'm happy to say I have neither.

The other thing I discovered is where more cold is entering the cab in winter. There area few places where there are holes (no dash, no metal wall, nothing) behind the glass. I'm sure the same places are allowing heat in during the Texas summers. I'm going to find a way to put some insulation up where the windshield meets the hood. I added a couple more pics attached showing these holes.

Thanks again, Larry

I forgot to add one additional detail. When everythng was done and they put the blue tape on the edges, the installer said to "leave it there for 24 hours.". And then he corrected himself and said that "Motorhomes like this tend to flex alot. Try not to move it for at least 48 hours. The longer the sealant sets before moving the better to avoid any leaks."

That advice supports the other conversations we've had here in the forum on the cut-away-cab and flexing.
