Cab heat and sound insulation - floor
« on: June 10, 2023, 05:10:54 pm »
Insulating the floor was a bigger job than the doors and doghouse. It took a total of about 8 hours.  We had removed the seats (4 bolts) prior to removing the doghouse knowing we were going to insulate the floor.  After removing the doghouse, we took off the inner side panels (3 pop-in trim retainers).  We had to remove the scuff panels at each door as they not only held down the carpet but also the outer footwell side panels.  Last we removed the carpet strip where the cab meets the coach (10 screws).  The carpet was then carefully pulled up - it was glued directly to the metal but peeled up easily.  We lightly scraped the glue residue, vacuumed and wet wiped the floor.  3 widths of the Dynamat extreme (sound deadening) covers the width of the floor.  To get the correct shape around the doghouse area we simply laid it over the edge and pressed to make an impression.  I then cut about 3/4” from the indentation so the doghouse seal would sit against bare metal.  I marked and cut out where the seat bolts would pass through as well as the electrical box under the drivers seat.  I applied the Dynamat up to and behind the wire bundle running just in front of where the cab and coach meet. After delaying the 3 large sheets I used the paper backing to make templates for the wheel wheel areas.  These were done in pieces and the bare firewall on the passenger side was covered as well. All the Dynamat was then rolled down to insure good contact and adhesion.  We chose to also put Dynaliner padding down for thermal insulation.  This was done similar to the Dynamat.  I was carful to cut it slightly smaller around the doghouse and at the door openings where the scuff plated would lie. I did not apply it to the sides of the wheel well as the space for feet is so cramped.  The old carpet was placed on top of the new rug (5x8 area rug) and used as a pattern.  All bolt holes etc were marked and precut as well.  After insuring  and adjusting fit where necessary we used double sided carpet tape.  We applied it along the vertical edge where the cab meets the coach, around the perimeter and other strategic locations. We layer the rug starting on the vertical edge exposing the carpet tape strips as we carefully rolled it forward into place and up into the wheel wheels.  All parts were put back in the reverse order they were removed.
