Stolen Catalytic Converter - Security Ideas?
« on: December 29, 2021, 12:20:43 pm »
Hello ALL

Well a couple days before Christmas I went out to my storage place to pick up our 2021 3100 and started her up to a special present - a monster truck sound.  I knew what it was immediately.  Crawled under and there you have it....or there it isn't anymore.  ;(.   I find myself so disgusted with criminals right now as we also had about $300 in gift cards stolen in shipment by just ripping open the UPS envelope....which UPS still delivered mind you.

Anyway, the reason for my post is to seek any advice on added security.  When you store your unit at a public storage unit you are putting yourself out there.  I wish I had space at home.   My sense is that I am really stuck no matter what with this risk since even if I put some cameras around it and a siren it would be set-off a lot, ripped down, etc.

If anyone has any good ideas would sure appreciate them.   Working with the police who recovered some and hoping to maybe just maybe recover my OEM converter so it can be welded back in.

Happy New Year PC Friends.

Phil

A thread on the IRV2 forum suggests masking your license  plate numbers onto the cat with tape and painting the entire cat red using VHT Flameproof high temperature exhaust header paint.  They say thieves won’t steal it because the “scrap dealers” won’t accept it. Maybe someone with a background in law enforcement can comment on this idea?  The CatClamp product is another suggestion.

Sorry to hear that, Phil.      We had our's stolen this past summer while parked in our driveway.    First time in 6 years of parking it there.
I too am scratching my head as to what to do this coming summer.  More  and brighter lights ?     I know you can  get motion detector cameras that alert your cell phone,
but then you're up 10 times a night every time a deer or other passing animal  decides to cut through the yard.        Maybe something really heavy blocking the Cat.
area that only you and a couple others can move when needed ?        The stenciled paint idea could just be painted over, I would think.  Maybe etched in ?
I would like to booby-trap it somehow,  but knowing me, it would probably just back-fire on me somehow !
I share your pain, we're hopping mad too !
Jim

If only a supplier made something like this for the E350/E450 that bolts to the frame making it too much trouble for thieves.  The one pictured is for a Honda Element.

As a retired police officer (after 26 years with Denver Police) I can state with 100% certainty, that if a thief wants something bad enough, they'll get it.  The idea for prevention is to make your something harder to get than someone else's something.

With that in mind, I would have the catalytic converter welded to the exhaust pipe and/or to a frame mounted steel strap.  Those won't stop a dedicated thief with all the tools and time on their hands, but it should make the theif go to a different vehicle where it's easier.

Same boat here. Had our converter stolen a while ago and just bought a https://catclamp.com/. It is getting installed next week. If nothing else our insurance company will be happier.
Jack is what we call our PC 2351D, and he has taken us from campers to RV'ers and loving it. We're no longer Team Bob. Just Jack the RV!

I just ran into this product with some internet searches...I think this is the one my police detective suggested looking at.   Ive asked them which model is best for the E-450 chassis.

Mine was cut off while stored in "secured" storage facility with cameras all over.  Local police are painting converters as mentioned plus etching Vin on it.  Thieves will still find unscrupulous scrape dealer.  Looking into catclamp, too, so would appreciate info on installation
