valve extenders
« on: March 11, 2021, 10:19:46 am »
It's been several years since there was a discussion on the forum about what type of valve extenders to use on the back inner tires/wheels.   I am in the process of new tires and would appreciate input if I should keep my flexible braided extenders or consider solid steel extenders for the inside back tire.

thanks

I recall reading somewhere you should not put rigid extenders on standard rubber valve stems, do the solid wheel mounted valves instead.

I had constant problems with flexible valve extenders leaking.

I installed Tire Man metal extenders with rubber stabilizers and never had another problem.

I installed the Borg type extenders described here and I have been very pleased. https://forum.phoenixusarv.com/index.php?topic=2733.msg22380#msg22380
I did not like the braided extenders that Phoenix supplied.  The pressure sensors did not work well with the extensions and I had leak issues.  The pressure sensors no doubt saved me from flats or worse blow outs on multiple occasions.

I use TST tire pressure monitors which I have been well pleased.  Two of the six sensors came off a travel trailer I had prior to the Phoenix.  These two have been in use for about 7 years the other sensors about 4 years.

Several years ago Michelin had a recall on tires that my rig had. When we called Michelin with the  series numbers they ok’d the replacement but stated if the valve extenders weren’t removed they would not warranty the new tires.  I have no idea if this is still the case but it was up front to me that they had no faith in them.

I presently have the Borg valve stems that have the rubber insert to hold it in place . The only issue I had in these was getting the right rubber inserts for the wheel slots. Some fords have diff slot shapes over others. I ended up sending them a photo with a ruler across it . They were very helpful figuring it out.

Zolman,  I called the tire man I think last year.  He was not in business anymore.  Maybe someone took over his business.  I will give them a call to check it out.

Kept having one of my inner rear tires loose air.  Had to pump tire up each day.  Ended up buying a new set of extensions made by a company called Phoenix.  I also installed a tire pressure monitor system.  Have not had any problems since.

I’ll never use extensions again. Ours leaked like a sieve.  We installed the dulley valve stems and never had another problem.

Old thread BORG update.  As in nothing’s perfect I ran into a issue with the Borg valve stem I hadn’t thought of.  I had a flat on an inner dual. I couldn’t find a tire shop in Portland Maine to repair the tire so I mounted my spare.  Due to the length of the Borg stem on the inner dual it can not be mounted on the rear carrier of your coach. Not a problem if you have a toad to throw it in but if not you’ll need to place it inside your motorhome until repaired and remounted. FYI only, should you ever find yourself in this spot.

In my case I finally found a Ford dealer to repair the tire so I took it there with my Jeep.

Joseph, I have to ask.

What was the issue with tire shops in Portland, Maine?  Not familiar with the town, but I see it's a county seat--almost 70K population.
I don't carry a spare, but I do carry a quality tire plugging kit for emergencies and I've always "assumed" that in most populated areas I could locate someone to properly repair a tire if I have a flat.  (Haven't had to validate that yet----hence the question)!!

Mike, we called 5 different shops. Not one would handle removing and fixing the flat. 2 offered if I brought the wheel in they would get to it in a few days to a week.  Which means they weren’t interested. The Ford dealer was willing to fix the flat while I waited only if I brought the wheel in.

I carry a plug kit.  Safety seal .  However thousands of miles from home on an inner dual I wanted it with an internal patch rather than reaming a bigger hole for a plug.

Thanks Joseph.  I agree totally.  My plug kit is Safety Seal too--it will do the job if it's the only option, but I will certainly go with the internal patch if I can.  Maybe I've put too much faith in being able to find a responding tire service.  I don't have a good option for a spare, unless I pitch one in the back of the Jeep--but that's where I carry my folding e-bike.  Might have to reconsider, though.
