Sealing around bin door frame?
« on: June 25, 2021, 11:01:56 pm »
Just got back from my four night maiden trip in the new PC to Paynes Prairie State Park outside of Gainesville. Of course, being summer time in Florida we got multiple inches of rain from afternoon thunder storms three of the four days. Everything appeared to stay dry around the three slides which was my main concern.

One thing that seemed odd was the water leaking down the inside of the bin door above the slide out storage drawer and the door on the rear cap when opened. On both of these, water runs down the inside face of the doors when they are opened. It looks like water is getting into the door itself around the outside frame of the door. Neither of these doors appears to have any sealant between the face of the door and the outside frame.

Has anyone sealed this seam/joint? There are two holes in the bottom edge of the door frame, on both doors, that look like drain holes for water that gets into the door. If they are supposed to be drains they are not working very well.

Hi Kevin,

I know it's work, but pictures would help understand your description better.

Both of those doors open upward so if they are wet on the outside, yes, water will drip off the surface and into the compartment.  But if the outside surface of the door is dry and you get water dripping when you open it, I would just put a rubber or closed cell foam weather seal around the opening or on the inside edge of the compartment door.

It's inexpensive just don't use a thick weather seal, you will have problems locking and opening the doors then.

Here are a few pictures that may clarify my question. Hopefully the pictures and text boxes on them are readable.

My door has a small thin bead of sealant all the way around where the frame meets the door on the outside. Not sure if the previous owner did it or it came that way. No leaks that I have noticed.

Boy, those pictures are clear as a bell.

I only wish I could contribute in the answer to your question.

The door you have is much more robust than the storage door in our 2007.

I agree with Ron, that door is thicker and has a totally different latching mechanism than the one on my 2015 model 2551.

Excellent display of your problem.  Need a detailed tutorial on how you added the arrows and text to describe your problem.  As for the leak, looks like the smallest bead of caulk would fix it.  Run a piece of painters tape to the upper and lower side of the groove to minimize squeeze out.

Thanks for the feedback so far.  I wasn't sure if PC designed these doors to drain and didn't need caulking or not.  There sure isn't any sealant on them.  I guess other than the labor to caulk them, it shouldn't cause any problems. Can't hurt to keep the water out of these doors. I thought about calling PC but I don't think I will have much luck.

Regarding the arrows and text on my pictures, I used a Microsoft program called "Paint 3D". It comes with Windows 10. You may have to put your mouse pointer on your photo file name, right click on it and choose "open with" off the list that comes up to see the option to use it.
