Backup camera temporarily conked out
« on: February 26, 2011, 09:02:53 am »
On our PC, the backup camera recently took a short vacation.  DW fired up the coach and I was following in the not-a-toad-yet and she pulled over saying the backup camera went dead.  I took a look and the Sony monitor was that bright "signal? what signal?" blue.

As this came relatively hot on the heels of the driver's side mirror developing a tendency to flop over due to high wind, passing semis, or moderately bumpy roads, we figured we better go ahead and get it looked at.

(I know that long ago when I was in high school my school's swim team's motto was "Nothing behind you matters" but I confess to a certain skepticism as to whether the same is true for RV'ing.)

On our way to do that, about 15-20 minutes later, the camera came back on all by itself.

I've looked around for access to the backup camera in the back and the camera is bolted on to the outside, but the cable disappears through a hole into points unknown.  (Possibly the bathroom's "wet wall.")

Has anyone seen anything similar happen?

Or, for that matter, do you know what I ought to do with that mirror?  It's got a couple of alan wrench bolts in the base that look like they ought to tighten it down, but they feel like they've already been tightened by The Terminator.  I don't think human hands are going to improve matters there... at least, not mine.  So I don't know what to do.

Thanks!

You are correct about the mirror, the Hex bolts do tighten the mirror. You may need to losen it, move the ball around a little and retighten the bolts. You should of gotten a wench with the PC for this, but any allen wrench of the correct size will do. It helps to insert the short end into the bolt to break the bolt lose.

I can't help you on the camera as this has never happened to me. I would just check the connections on the back of the monitor, then wait to see if it ever happens again.

There is allen wrenches made in socket sets, you can buy on or a set. I think they come in 3/8" and 1/2" drive. I would suggest you put the allen socket in and with a small hammer tap a couple of times on the end of the socket. Sometimes this will "brake" the nut lose.
Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

My backup camera did the same as your's several times.  Each time it happened, I turned it off then back on after a few seconds and it worked fine.  Since moving the monitor to get it out of the way of the sunshade, I haven't had that problem.  I did notice a "dent" in the wire while I had it out that appeared to have been caused by the mount bracket screw.  I straightened the wire out, gently pushed it back in, crossed my fingers and screwed in the relocated bracket.  I also experienced the floppy mirror problem on my own PC and on another PC that I ferried to a dealer in AZ.  The problem is the set screw that the others have described.  After tightening mine, I dabbed a little white touch up paint on the top of the set screw just to make it "pretty" again.

Thanks guys, I will see if I can "break loose" the mirror bolts and, for the time being, cross my fingers on the backup camera. :)

Tapping my Allen wrench with a hammer loosened it right up and I was able to get the mirror adjusted and tightened down.  :cool

Thanks guys!

Our backup camera has conked out on us when getting started on a couple more occasions since I originally posted, most recently today.  It's getting concerning because it was out for at least an hour today before all of a sudden we were driving down the road and it blinked from solid blue to our bright yellow toad.

I don't know if it's cold or moisture or what's going on, but I sure would like to get to the bottom of it.

Call the factory, you are still under warranty.
