Macerator back up drain.

For the last 3 or so years we've been carrying a stinky slinky, just in case the macerator dies. Haven't used it yet.
How many of you carry such a back up method, or another, and where do you store it? With our luck, the trip I leave it at home, we'll need it.

I carry one in a tube sold by Camping world, but you can make one easily enough with PVC pipes and such from Home Depot.

Gave some thought to adding one when I took delivery of my unit in 2019, but didn't pull the trigger.  May regret it someday, but no problems with the macerator to date.   Storage was one of my concerns.  I guess I could find somewhere to stuff it, but I've already got a lot of (probably too much) "contingency stuff", and without installing a tube (or piece of PVC) like Ron references, there's really no remaining outside storage for it.

I rationalized the decision by saying that it's a pretty common item, and I probably could find/acquire one within a day or so if my macerator fails.  So far I've not had to test that theory!

Used the 'stink slinky' yet again today to empty the tanks after bike week. $10 fee at a local campground for my 30 min of flushing. The macerator has not been needed in years. it (the macerator) certainly has been the hero of the moment more than once,  but for our needs the slinky has been the answer for most every 'dump' time now for a few years.


I really like the fact I can flush the black and gray tanks and see what evacuates, and when it is CLEAN to my liking. Multiple fill/drain cycles are part of my dump routine.  The macerator is more of an emergency solution than a regular solution now. LOVE having the option to make sh*t flow uphill, however.  so it remains close on board.

I have a Rhino hose I store in the spare tire enclosure along with the tire.  Early on after purchasing the PC a hole developed in the Macerator hose due to improper installation.  The stinky slinky came in handy rather than dribbling sewage from the Macerator hose at the dump station. 


Since then I have relied solely on the Turbo Macerator system which has performed well.  I must admit I was somewhat skeptical of the Macerator at first as all my previous experience had been with the Rhino hose but have found the pump system cleaner and faster dumping.

I carry a hose as well in a carrier I made from pvc fence post with a C channel (pvc) gutter as a drawer in it. Macerators are so cheap (all of $30 on Amazon) I carry a second one along with the slinky. I ordered three different macerators on Amazon and found them identical right down to the labels with the exception of price ranging from $28 to about $150.  My previous macerator by Jabsco ($160+) only lasted one full season before it started shutting down half way thru a tank and I had to wait for it too cool down to finish. At 30 bucks this unit already lasted a season, owes me nothing and still works perfectly. But yes I carry a slinky. I guess because I can’t help myself from hauling more crap around than I need.

I keep a so-far unused one coiled up in a sturdy plastic bag in the rear hatch tucked in the street-side behind the spare tire. Hope I never have to use it, The macerator is so much easier. My PC came with no dump valve on the gravity drain, glad I figured it out as it would be too late to add one once I needed it.

I just replaced all dump valves and Auto-drains, and last year the Macerator, so I figure to be "good-to-go" for 11 more years.

Ya know I had it in my head I must carry a slinky hose so I built a place to store it. Fact is you can buy them at dang near every Walmart or RV spot across the country. If I’d given any real thought I’d of realized if the need arises I’ll buy it then.  It’s there now and I store an extra 19 foot hose for the macerator with it along with the spare macerator.  Now the macerator is small and you can’t get them at Walmart . It was so cheap it just made sense in risk management to
have it along.

There’s prob several items I drag along that I really don’t need to being readily available. We’re not exactly camping in the outback
