Slide Out Of Adjustment - 2019 3100
« on: June 10, 2020, 02:45:43 pm »
One week into a 3 month trip and my slide is "bucking and popping" going out and in.  It has gotten progressively worse.  When I have a chance, I will look at the manual, but doubtful it will be in there.

Just in case it completely fails, can someone explain to me how to deploy and bring-in the slide manually.   DAMN SLIDES!!!!

Cheers  :)(:

On our 2010 2551 there is a crank handle that looks similar to a tire iron lug nut handle somewhere, usually in the slam latch storage or the trunk (rear hatch.)
Then there is a rubber grommet in the bottom corner of the slide, remove it and you will see a bolt head which you turn with the crank to manually operate the slide.
I would hope that info is in the "manual."

Have someone watch outside as you deploy the slide. Our slide topper stopped working properly so the slide motor worked to roll out the slide room but was fighting against the "locked" slide topper. It bucked and popped and would seem to stick then hop out a bit when the topper released a bit. We couldn't find anything wrong and were persistent in putting out the slide - we succeeded in ripping one hinge for the slide topper right out of the rig and loosening the other.

John climbed up and laid on the roof hanging part way over the side while I tried to stabilize things from below. He managed to jam the screws back in, we stopped putting the slide out and it held until we got to the factory. They had to replace the slide topper AND move the hinge since the screw holes were stripped out. They put pop rivets or some such in the old holes to seal them. No clue why it failed.

DAMN SLIDES!!!
People here who know me, know how I feel about slide-outs.  We intentionally ordered our PC-2350 without a slide-out to avoid saying that very comment one day.

You've got a 2018 model year which means you have Phoenix's 2nd generation (current generation) slide-out mechanism which does not include the emergency manual crank-in feature.  I don't know what you do if your slide-out won't go in.  Maybe "push in" from the outside while your spouse presses the button?

Lippert slide outs DO have manual override:

Glad you might read the manual, because that information is in it according to Lippert.

The Lippert system that PC is using does not have a manual override. I hate to say this but there are other 3100 models that are having slide issues as well. I have the system in my 2552 which I believe is the first year for PC. Mine works well so far, but I watch it closely when opening and closing.  It sounds to me like you have a gear that is missing some teeth.  This happens when the side binds or people are sitting in the slide when its being opened or closed.  I have a pretty good understanding of how the thing works as I was very curious when i got my PC and did a bunch of research just in case I had issues.  The only thing you can do is go to the controller and unplug the motors which release the brakes in the motors and you can manually push the slide back in... Thats what they say but if its bound up, not sure what happens... Take a close look at your tracks on the side of the slide and see if you notice any damage to them, that will give you a clue as to where the problematic gear is .  There is a gear for each track, and they are joined by a shaft and driven by a motor.  So you have 2 motors one on each side.  Each motor is driving 2 gears one for each track. There are gibs that help keep everything in alignment. There are also some Teflon rollers under the slide for support.

I am not sure if you are aware and have been holding the button to open or close the slide 5 seconds after the slide stops.  This is recommended by Lippert to help keep the motors in sync. If you allow them to get out of sync the controller will be flashing a red LED light not sure which one but it tells you on the controller. They also say you should be lubricating everything annually, which i have done and its a real pain.  Rather get a root canal then do it again, because of how the wall is shaped and how far back everything is set.

I hate to say it but it doesn't sound very good.... Best of luck and I would be interested to hear how it works out for you.

Forgot to add that if the motors get out of sync the slide binds and teeth on the gears end-up getting broken...

We had the same thing happen on our previous DP.  Since then, I always stand outside as the slide is deployed.  Next time we deploy the slide, I will pay close attention to the awning.
Thanks for your reply.

Good reply, thanks.  I do continue depressing the button for 5 seconds.  I did watch a video from Lippert that gave instructions on re-syncing the motors.  In and out 8-10 inches three times.  I also have figgered it was missing some teeth.

I know seem to remember being told on delivery that unplugging the mechanism released the brakes, allowing the slide to be pushed in manually.

I had a unique problem with my slide under warranty and went to Elkhart for repair.   The issue resumed and I called Dave Ponser who documented it in my "file".

I hope this does not ruin our trip.  We are currently having a great time in Estes Park, CO.

I swore I would never have another moho with slides.  I bought a new Monaco Diplomat LE in 2001 to go fulltime.  The slide leaked bad.  One time during a heavy rain, I actually had water seeping out of a 110 outlet in the slide.  It was a night mare.  Never did get it completely fixed.  I had considered a Lazy Daze moho, but didnt want to travel to California.  Dont misunderstand; I am happy with my PC except for the slide issue.

Thanks for your comments.

EngineerLT, I dont think the slide is out of alignment.  I did look at the tracks.  The tracks toward the front are getting boogered up at the end of the slide.

We are leaving tomorrow and I will see how the slide retracts.  So far that has not been a problem.  Just when deploying the slide.

Finally, all the videos show that the motor must be lifted out of the track to operate manually.  As you said, just disconnect the power and this releases the brake.  I just hope this doesnt screw our trip.  I will be at a buddy's ranch for three days in Gillette, WY.  If I get into trouble, I will have a place to stay and hopefully get someone out to look at it.

This whole comment probably makes no sense.  It gives me the feeling of "doing something".  I have my credit card and money in the bank if needed!

Cheers :)(:
