Spare Tire Cover

Hello the spare tire cover seemed a bit strange to me when I took it off to check tire pressure and reinstall it. I have seen on the forum where people talk about installing it and some have changed the seal etc. to make it fit tighter so it didn't seem to want to fall off. I looked at mine for awhile then noticed that the pathway cut into the mounting tube was bent outward some. So I reached up and went to see if I could bend it back into position to find that it was almost like bending a coat hanger. I realized that if I wanted to feel confident in the mounting of the cover I would have to stiffen up the pathway that the latch traveled. I ended up cutting a piece of 1/8" steel and shaping it (looked like a half moon) to fit into the tube. I then got out the trusty Miller welder and installed it. Since then this spare tire cover fits like a glove. You don't have to do anything special to get it to mount, my wife can even remove it and install it without worrying about seeing it fly off as we go down the road. Not sure if any one else has found this but it works for me.

I store my extra sewer hose in the spare, and FORGOT TO TIGHTEN THE COVER once... The PC Angel kept it from falling off.

I thought the biggest problem was getting the lip of the cover between the tire and housing. You may have found the real cause...

IIRC, the 'tube' the latch mounted to on mine was robust...but I never really have examined it. Will do so now.

Here are a couple pictures, you can see the machine screw head in the piece I welded in. I did this as I also found that the way the tube is cut with the latch, it really didn't sit behind the raised portion of the latch's pathway. So the screw provides for a stop for the latch. arm, as the arm swings past the screw and gets tightened up it keeps the tire cover from being rotated and the latch aligning with the cutout allowing for the cover to fall off. I did this right after I purchased the coach.
