Winegard Rayzar.Z1 Antenna Replacement
« on: October 13, 2019, 07:50:42 pm »
We bought our 2017 2910D last month.  I was winterizing today, went up on the roof to cover the air conditioner and did not see the Rayzar antenna, just the mount. Strange it may seem, but we bought this on consignment and I did not climb onto the roof at the time during PDI (it's a 78-year-old guy thing..and it was almost 100 dgs). I can only surmise it blew off somehow on our 1000-mile trip from Texas to home in South Dakota because it was left in "travel" mode and the wind took it..??  I simply cannot remember if it was there on the roof at the dealer. I suppose it.could possibly have been consigned without the antenna "head". Have not asked the 1st owner..yet. But now I realize why we could not get OTA TV on the road and why the inside antenna control turns endlessly.

Has anyone had to replace one of these? I see them for sale on Amazon (mostly whole units).  But not sure, if it in fact broke off (!!), what is actually broken and what needs to be replaced.

This is the 2nd puzzlement in our one-month ownership. The first was how did we get a 15,000 BTU A/C (not a heat pump) on the roof, with no heat strip, when the factory build says it came with a 13,500 BTU with a heat strip. We have obviously lots of A/C now, but might have been nice to have s heat strip. To cap it off, the unit on the roof will not take a heat strip at all. I have verified that with both my local certified tech and Dometic..

  Any comments appreciated.

A Pelonis disk furnace (ceramic heating elements plus fan) puts out more heat than the heat strip in our 13,500 dometic a/c.   We put ours on the sink and set it to automatic mode.  If you wanted, you could also turn the a/c fan to. Low rather than auto to circulate the air.

I would presume the previous owner swapper out the 13,500 a/c for the 15,000 as the 13,500 unit is a bit undersized for the 2910.  The 13,500 can't keep up in ouy 2551 when temp is in upper 80's and 90's.

I'm with Donc - you got a bonus with the 15k A/C unit and lack of heat strip is inconsequential,  the heat strip in our Dometic A/C can't even warm the interior of our 2350 so not likely to be reliable for your 2910. We went with a small Honeywell ceramic heater that can be adjusted to direct air or provide 360° output and it's quiet enough to sleep with, unlike the heat strip/fan of the rooftop unit.

Ours disappeared this last summer. Didn't realize it until couldn't get TV stations while close to a good size city. Have no idea when prior it came off. It left the base and broke off where the mast meets the base. It's not a great design as it is fairly week physically at that point.

I bought the complete kit off of Amazon as you need everything but the inside pieces to replace it. Took a bit of digging through the caulking to get to all of the base screws to remove the base piece. I fought with it some trying to get the assembly lined up facing forward correctly. Finally just marked the inside knob and base when it is lined up facing forward.

Overall it was probably a 2 hour job. If everything had gone peachy (things never do) it would probably be an hour or less of work to replace.
