Battery maintenance

   I'm thinking about buying a battery tender type unit for use on my house batteries – two 12V/parallel.    I really don't know anything about these units.  While checking the internet one brand said it had something that would automatically desulfate the plates and I wasn't sure if that was true or just a gimmick  There was a large difference in prices and amps available.  Does anyone have a suggestion for what make / model that they might recommend for me to purchase?

Yes, desulfating the plates is a real thing, not a gimmick.

I used to have a battery tender until it died.  They do work well.  My replacement is a multi-stage 4 to 40 amp charger.  4 amps for monthy maintenance, and 40 amps for quick charges from the generator when on trips.  Regardless of what you get, if used outdoors, you really shouldn't leave it tending unless you are able to set it up safely from the elements and critters.

Ron ... I think I might order the BatteyMinder that desulfates then.  It is suppose to help prolong the life of the batteries.  I would be using it inside the garage.  As always thanks for your expertise.

You should check what converter/charger is in your RV. If it has 3 stage charging with equalization, the equalization does the desulfation. You then wouldn't need a battery minder for your house batteries, just leave the RV plugged in all of the time.

You don't want to do that if its a simpler charger as it will burn up your batteries. Also, if you have liquid lead acid batteries and live in a cold climate you should bring the batteries in from the cold as they could freeze..again damaging them. AGMs have a much lower freezing temp if kept charged and shouldn't be an issue.
