Determining the value of a used RV.....
« on: January 13, 2017, 12:06:23 pm »
We have been looking at new and used RV's for the past year.  The question always is what is the true value of a used
unit.  We have been doing a lot of reading and research on the subject and have found that the bottom line seems to be.
a good price is "what ever a seller is willing to sell for and what a buyer is willing to pay".  With this in mind you do however need
some base or starting point to determine average values.

In the attachment (hope it comes through) we have summarized the findings in several publications on the subject.  The first page
contains three methods used to determine value of a used unit, and the authors comments on each of the methods.  The second page takes the three methods and applies each to an example of a used PC.  I was a little surprised at how close the value of the RV was using the three methods.

Please feel free to comment on our findings.  Are we going in the right direction?  Is something missing?

i believe that most RV dealers use the NADA RV guide. http://www.nadaguides.com/rvs  What an individual uses is up to them.

Your 3 methods look good.

I have noticed that PC's do not depreciate as fast as other models as evidenced in looking at PC's inventory pricing. PC's go for much higher than similar models of same age and mileage.

Good luck in finding the RV of your dreams.

For kicks, I input our 2007 2350 on NADA-RV.

The stated original MSRP of ~$79,000 is $9,000 less than the documented MSRP of our PC, so that figure is off by a lot.
Low Retail: $32,700
Average Retail: $39,400

I would hope that our PC would be worth more than average retail given it's preservation with indoor heated storage.  It still looks new.  Strange as it may sound but it even smells new inside.  When I take it to our church car show on Father's Day weekend, many people think it is brand new.  Obviously they are not familiar with the change in body style Ford made in 2008.

Our PC might be worth ~$50,000 but who would ever pay that much for a 10 year old Phoenix Cruiser without a slide out?  Good thing our plan is to keep it till our driver's licenses are taken from us.  At age 58, I hope that won't be for another 28-30 years.

One thing certain, if it got totaled or stolen, we'd get so little from an insurance claim.

We just bought our PC 2400 Sprinter from a Florida dealer for NADA low retail price.  We knew a lot about the rig because we had been in talks with the previous owner for some time and could have bought it from her for about $5k less; but couldn't get to Florida from our home near Chicago before the owner needed to sell or trade.  But, in dealing with Campbell RV, we had the advantage of knowing the good (very), the less than good (minimal), and the the ugly (approx what trade in they allowed the previous owner); plus knowing the dealer only had it on his lot for about a month, and they wanted it off the lot before 2016 taxes came due.  My point is that if you research and luck is sort of on your side, you can beat the odds of getting a good deal on a used PC.  Cheers,  :)(:

Ron my understanding is that the NADA MSRP shown on any given year is an average list price for that year.  Its suppose to include an average amount of options for that year.....I think.  I noticed doing the research that on all years I looked at, the NADA MSRP was always $7-$10,000 more then the PC base prices before options.  It was also noted most PC owners add far more then that amount in options when they build one....like you found.

As Keelhauler mentioned it seems that Phoenix Cruisers are considerably more valuable from a resale standpoint then your average production line RV. In looking at the PPL actual sales prices I found that most other run of the mill rv's sold for 3%-8% below NADA "low value" However PC's sold for 3%-5% more. In the class B/C category PC's, Coach House, Lazy Daze, Born Free seem to be in a class of there own.

Would this be of any assistance to you? It's a database of sold prices of used RVS

RD-yes its a good guide for looking at the "real" bottom line.  I did use it for one of the pricing methods
in my little survey.  As a renter of RV's for the past many years there's actually a break even point in terms
of should you continue renting or make the plunge and buy.  That point can vary quite a bit depending on ones
potential use of the RV.  From a monetary point its around 45-50 days a year for us.  That said, you sometimes cant put
a price on the adventures and quality of life that comes with the ownership of an RV.  To each his own I guess.

Thanks
