General Discussion / Re: How many miles
« on: December 16, 2018, 07:37:11 pm »
Direct drive from Chicagoland to Alaska is pretty much a 7 day drive each way at 500 miles a day. (We have done it a dozen times). There are a lot of reasons for stops and side trips besides Bannf and Jasper. Once you get to Alaska 3 - 6 weeks depending on your objectives for a road tour and a few activities. Lots of people drag a vehicle, I don't think it's needed unless you drive a gigantic DP.

Particularly in the Province of Quebec, French is the predominant language. If you know even a little French the natives will appreciate it. When we use a credit card, we favor American Express. The conversion rate and charges seem to be more reasonable than MasterCard, or Visa.

General Discussion / Re: How long in Elkhart for delivery

We flew into O'hare and found that we could take a limo for less than the cost of renting and dropping off in Elkhart. You might consider checking that out.

Around the Campfire / Re: Quartzsite, AZ

We are about as far from AZ as we can be, but we have owned a 2400 for 5 years. We really enjoyed it. The only challenge was having to make the bed each night and break it down in the morning, but once you develop a routine for that task it is less of an issue. A tour of any PC would be worthwhile and utilize the folks on this forum for help with virtually any issue. Congratulations and welcome.

General Discussion / Re: Winter Travel

We live in Alaska. We don't camp in the winter, but early on we experienced enough incidents of macerator freezing when we were camping in in chilly fall/spring trips that we decided to bypass the macerator and use the gravity dump when we were filled and had to dump in freezing temps. We also have tank heaters. Since adopting that practice we have not had any problems.

General Discussion / Re: Wheel Covers

I removed our wheel covers after the first year. I had a leak involving an extension on an inside rear wheel. After that I retired the extensions and the wheel covers (yes, they are pretty). I bought one metal extension that I use to  check the inside tires.

Another way we found to isolate the entry gaps is to intentionally drive on dusty dirt roads and look for areas where the dust is intruding into cabinets and other areas. Early on after delivery my DW nearly blew a gasket when all the clean items she stored in the cabinet under the sink in the kitchen area were coated with dust. As you noted we also found gaps around different pipes that went thru the floor. I spent an hour or so with a can of expanding foam sealing the gaps. Problem solved. We reported the issue and our solution to the plant.

If you go .... in the winter part of the highway is on the frozen river with temps in the -40's .... in the spring it is mud .... in the summer yield to mosquitoes even in your PC .... very empty and very pretty in the early fall ... we went  in the fall in our 4x4 PC .... (fall in the Yukon begins in late August and ends in early September) .... good luck

General Discussion / Re: Black valve light
« on: October 23, 2017, 11:59:49 am »
I had the same issue with the blinking light and the issue in my case was a dirty/corroded contact within the housing of the gate valve. I removed the gate valve disassembled the housing and cleaned the contact thoroughly reassembled and since then the light no longer blinks.

General Discussion / Re: A couple of Qs for 2351 4x4 owners

The worst road conditions we have encountered were in Northeast Pennsylvania on I84. The cumulative effect of these and other roads meant lots of creaks, groans, and loose fasteners.  We never regretted the extra expense of the conversion or the slight decrease in gas mileage. When we ordered our unit the E350 chassis was standard and the E450 was an option. We chose the E350 because of better rear differential gearing and we specified manual locking hubs in order to minimize gas mileage impact. We did all of our camping in the shoulder seasons and encountered sub freezing temperatures frequently. The PC's weakness is the water system both fresh and waste in freezing weather. The other issue is the lack of insulation on the side walls of any slide  as well as condensation as a result. Canadian truck camper makers seem to have a better handle on what it takes to support cold weather camping. In our comparison when we purchased the cost of a comparable truck camper mounted on a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup was more than the PC  with the conversion.

We owned a model 2400 with Quigley 4x4 and drove it 60,000 miles over 5 years and had only one minor issue with a differential seal that my mechanic fixed. From my conversations with Quigley I thought that only genuine ford parts were used for the conversion, in my case F350 components on a E350 motorhome chassis. We used the MH on a lot of gravel roads up here in Alaska as well as in Canada and the lower 48. My reply to questions about how it handled off road has always been "its like driving a box truck in the mud except you have better traction". It does NOT compare to a truck camper unless your truck camper weighs over 12,000 lbs. We found the most useful function for the four wheel drive was in the snow. My opinion is that you might be better served by a normal motorhome and a 4 wheel drive toad like a classic jeep wrangler.

General Discussion / Re: Sagging rear end

We had an extra leaf added to the rear suspension instead of air bags. It was much less expensive than the quoted price for air bags and the impact on ride quality was  positive. It raised the rear about  an inch and a half.

General Discussion / Slideout insulation
« on: February 05, 2017, 11:36:35 pm »
The recent topic about cold weather camping got me thinking. Has anyone who does cold weather (sub freezing <32f ) camping in a PC with a slide had issues with cold air leaking in thru the walls and around the frame? Our bed is located in the slide and in normal (above freezing) weather it is not a problem but on those cold nights the area around the frame and side walls of the slide are noticeably colder than the rest of the motor home. Has anyone noticed this and come up with a temporary or permanent  solution that does not effect the functionality of the slide? It seems like the outside walls of the slide are insulated  but he sidewalls and frame seals are not. There are no noticeable air or water leaks around the slide frame. The slide mechanism operates flawlessly. We do most of our camping in the spring and fall, so this is a significant issue effecting our sleeping comfort. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
