General Discussion / Another wax thread

This stuff works GREAT on white gelcoat
https://www.meguiars.com/marine/products/meguiarsr-flagship-premium-marine-wax-m6332-32-oz-liquid
Very easy on and off, high gloss with minimal splotchy/cloudy haziness. Applied using a 8” orbital polisher with terry cloth bonnets. Removed light to medium oxidization. Time will tell how long it lasts.

General Discussion / Simple plug and play T5 fluorescent to LED upgrade
« on: September 23, 2023, 10:25:01 pm »
Works in the existing ballasted fixtures without rewiring. Nice and BRIGHT 500 lumens, 4100k cool white. Uses 10 watts per fixture vs. 16 with fluorescents. $10 per fixture.
I ordered 8 tubes for the 3 ceiling lights and bathroom. The forward one really lights up the cab area
. I’ll probably just leave the dimmer fluorescent tubes in the under-cabinet lights by the bed and in the slideout for late night reading.

General Discussion / Stoads

I chose a super light model folding e-bike so putting two inside the PC for safekeeping while away would be easier to manage. Then with the forecast calling for rain I went shopping for a weatherproof bicycle cover for transporting them on a hitch mounted carrier, but a local bike shop guy suggested just carrying them inside instead. Why not, since DW agreed to give that a try.
I place our Qualisports Dolphins in 34”x17” plastic bins so they can’t roll around or tip over (that also works great in a SUV). One goes on the floor by the galley, with enough vertical clearance to fully open the refrigerator door. The other goes on the sofa, secured by the seatbelts.
At the campsite with the bikes chained up outside, the stacked bins are stored on the front seats and used for organizing, and do triple duty as a footrest while watching tv. Now I suspect I’ll be leaving the heavy Thule bike carrier at home most of the time.

This thing is awesome if you don’t have auto levelling jacks. DW will love it too 😁
Just turn it on, open the phone app, and it automatically connects by Bluetooth. Then slowly drive forward or back up a little while watching the graphic display on your phone to find the most level spot. It shows precisely how low each corner is, down to .25” resolution. No more trial and error or adding blocks until it’s right.
I mounted it by the stairwell, under the bottom of the flip up countertop extension for easy access to the on off switch. The hardest part was finding a perfectly level parking space to calibrate it using a bullseye bubble level.

General Discussion / Gen-Turi generator exhaust venting system?
« on: October 10, 2022, 07:31:21 pm »
Has anyone here used a Camco Gen-Turi kit on a PC with a slideout? The camping rules at Las Vegas Motor Speedway require the generator exhaust to vent either at roof level or behind the rig into the street.
On my 2350 the Gen-Turi would have to run up along the angled transition wall panel between the driver side door and slideout. That would require either sticking 2 bungee cord anchors onto the transition panel, or possibly angling the vertical pipe slightly towards the back and attaching the bungee cord anchors to the forward facing slideout wall.

General Discussion / Compact slinky at Lowes

This 20' slinky collapses to only 20" for easy storage. Lowes actually has a small RV plumbing and electrical parts section inside the plumbing department.

General Discussion / Heatshield 3 piece sun shades
« on: May 12, 2021, 06:42:03 pm »
These really work as claimed. The inside temperature only reached 85f after being closed up all day in bear country. Outside temperature was 80 degrees. All windows shut, roof vents open, fans off. The door window covers are exact fits and ideal night shades too

Tips and Tricks / Duraflame fire starters
« on: May 10, 2021, 06:10:24 pm »
No more smokey paper kindling and looking like a fool trying to get the campfire started.
A box of 12 fits neatly in any of the small overhead storage cabinets. I used 2 for good measure and had a red hot fire going in minutes. Vons grocery stores stock them too.

General Discussion / Severe Duty truck and tow brake kit
« on: April 27, 2021, 01:20:49 am »
Finally got my PowerStop Z36 front brake kit installed today. Parts are made in USA and appear to be high quality. Cross drilled rotors are beveled to prevent cracking. Tech support said to skip the special bedding procedure and just drive it. Good reviews online but too soon to tell. With only 3 miles driven the pedal pressure feels lighter. I am expecting the carbon fiber ceramic pads to stop quicker, and the drilled & slotted rotors to run cooler and not warp as easily as the stock Ford parts. Ordered from AutoAnything.

Much to my surprise it passed the CA smog check. The K&N CARB # sticker is only for cargo trucks, not certified for motorhomes. Lucky day !

General Discussion / Ongoing RV and RV parts shortage?
« on: November 12, 2020, 09:03:38 pm »
The parts store manager at our local Winnebago, Thor, and Forrest River dealer just told me that they still can’t get common RV parts because the distributors are struggling to supply the coach builders and Camping World first. The dealership still has no new class A, B, or C’s to sell because they are sitting at the factories waiting for air conditioners.
I’m guessing it’s only going to get worse since it looks like more lockdowns are coming. Good luck if you have a new rig on order, or are planning a winter project to get ready for 2021.

General Discussion / Pairing Bilstein Comfort series front shocks with HD series rears
« on: November 08, 2020, 06:50:44 am »
After completing an 1100 mile trip , I am totally pleased with this setup on my E350 2350.
With the tires inflated as specified to 65 psi front / 60 psi rear, DW says the 2350 now rides better than her Jeep. Rock Auto lists the Comfort series application as being for vans and short wheelbase motorhomes.
I decided on this configuration based upon multiple threads on this forum about front axle weights, a technical article about the stiffness of monotube vs. twin-tube shocks (Bilstein boasts about a larger piston) and some really pertinent old threads on RV.net.
Props to the legendary Eric Davis at Eric’s RV Performance Center

General Discussion / So you think you can wax ?
« on: October 05, 2020, 11:56:40 am »
So, what wax, if any, is easy for fiberglass gelcoat?
First time ever attempt, about 16 hrs of work:
Not liking the Seapower carnuba fiberglass cleaner-wax that I had in the garage from my sailing days. The end result looked splotchy , kind of hazy and uneven ( typical for one step cleaner- waxes?)
Also not liking the 3M Marine Scotchgaurd liquid wax. It hazes almost instantly, so it must be applied to 2’x2’ sections and wiped off with a microfiber cloth almost immediately. It seems like 2 random orbit polishers would be required because it dries too fast to change bonnets.
I ended up compounding the entire rv using a random orbit polisher and Seapower , then applying a coat of 3M Marine Scotchgaurd by hand. Pleased with the results, but not with either product. It looks about the same as when I pay Tony the detailer $200 to do it, but I didn’t have to wait a month for him to return from 🇮🇹Mexico . And it sure was a lot of work.
