Title: We're going to Elkhart
Post by: echo11 on May 07, 2012, 01:44:25 pm
We have a few issues we need to take care of with our RV.  It seems it would be best to go to the factory.  We will be driving from Cape Cod, MA  Taking either 4 or 5 days to get there. We can't tell from the map whether taking I-90 or I-80 would be the best route.  Those of you that have done this trip, what are your thoughts?  Also, any suggestions for campgrounds on the way or back?
Thanks-
Roni

Roni,
Two years ago, we went from Mattapoisett MA to Elkhart. We went I495 to 90 (Mass Pike). Our first night's stop was in Verona NY at The Villages at Turning Stone RV Park. It is very nice. Close to the Casino at Turning Stone (maybe 1/2 mile or so). We didn't get to the Casino. After Turning Stone, we took a detour to Niagara Falls. We had never been there. WOW!! If you haven't, it certainly is worth the little detour. We stayed at Four Mile Creek State Park. The neat thing is that if you stay at the State Park, you get free parking right at the Falls.
We then went on to a KOA in Stony Ridge Ohio. Don't waste your $$$ there. Worst KOA we have stayed at!!! I understand that there are dedicated RV sites at some Ohio rest areas-spend the night for free. We didn't know about that then and don't know if we would have done it but---
The next night was in Elkhart at the Elkhart Campground.

Are you back home now? When are you planning to head to Elkhart?

During the course of planning trips I discovered Ohio offers overnight RV parking at four of their service plazas.  We have seen them from the turnpike and they look pretty good.

Here is a link to their webpage:

I thought that they were free--Guess not! $20 for the night. Still cheaper than that horrible KOA we stayed at.

Judi,
We are not yet back home from our trip.  We are currently in Lancaster, Pa.  We are on our way home from FL.  We were going home and then going to figure out our trip to Elkhart.  After thinking about it, we realized it is closer to go from here.  We are now just trying to figure out our game plan.  So far we are stopping in Navarre, OH and then on to the Elkhart campground.  We have an appointment at Phoenix for Thurs and then will probably stay in Elkhart overnight and then head home.  We will probably take 3 or 4 nights to get back.  This was a quick change of plans for us.

I will look into the Ohio service plazas.  Sounds interesting.

Roni,

We have stayed at Elkhart Campground when we were in the area.  If rusty water bothers you, try to fill your fresh water tank somewhere along the way that has good water.  Then you won't have to use their water.  We got very rusty water at the Elkhart campground the two times we were there.  Elkhart has terrible water--especially at the factory.   You might even ask PC if you can stay in their lot the night before - just call and see if they'll leave the electric cord out for you.

Sue,
Thanks for the info on the water.  At this point I think we will stay 2 nights in Elkhart.  We feel more comfortable with full hookups, so we will stay at the campground.  We will bring drinking water for us and our dog.  Hanging out at the factory while the work is being done will be stressful for our dog, I think going back to the campground will be better for him that night.  Looks like we will then take 3 days to get home with overnight stops in Erie, Cooperstown and then home.
We will be happy to get our problems worked out at the factory.
Thanks for your input.

We have stayed at the Elkhart campground a couple times, and it's okay-full hookups and level spaces-last I noticed they were $35 less 10% Good Sam discount if you're a member.  I'm going to Elkhart next week to pick up our new 2552, and I noticed Elkhart Service & Collision has a campground with full hookups.  It's free if they're working on your rv, or $25 if not.  Comments online were okay.  Has anyone stayed there?

Hi Roni,

Last fall we were at Roamers retreat just east of Lancaster and had to go to the factory to pick up our new 2552. We took rt 30 west to 283 toward Harrisburg. Then we picked up 22/322 toward State Collage and I80 west. This is a nice troll free ride and a lot better than the PA turnpike. It took me about 10 hours with stops for lunch and breaks. Took that to Elby's Pines RV park in Bristol, In. Watch for the very small sign on the left side of the road. Nice little campground about 30 minutes from the factory and no problems with the water. Some of the sites near the top are level while others are not so level. They were working on improving the campground.

We stopped at one of the Ohio turnpike rest stops and saw the camping area. It was a blacktop parking lot complete with white lines, just as you are coming into the rest stop on the truck drive with w&e and a dump station. Nothing to stop the traffic noise from the trucks or the turnpike. If you are a lite sleeper, this would not be for you or me.

I hope you get this before you leave Lancaster.

hithere Hi, Roni. We're sitting in the Elkhart CG as I read the posts. Ordered our new 2100 yesterday and can't wait to come back to pick it up. We're heading back home today in a round about way.

The Elkhart CG is a pleasant, well kept CG. The water seems to be ok now. Maybe they fixed the problem (or maybe I've just been too excited to notice!). We paid about $59 for two nights with AAA or GoodSam discount. Can't remember which we used.

Sorry you've been having problems. Hope you get them fixed quickly. Take care driving on here and then back home.

Tom,
Although we has started onto the turnpike when I read your message, it has been very helpful.  We have changed our plans a bit.   We are planning to stop at West Branch state Park in Bristol, OH tonight and then on to Elkhart.  We are taking your suggestion for staying at Eby's.  The cleaner water helped us decide.  We don't mind the 1/2 hr drive to the factory.  Although the highway stops sound interesting, we have a very noise sensitive dog.  He and therefore us would not deal well with a lot of highway noise.  We are planning to stop overnight in Erie and Cooperstown on the way back home to Cape Cod.
We know we have made the right decision to have the work done at the factory.  We want to make sure the wiring for the replacement rear view camera is done correctly.  It will be 2 units instead of one.  This way the extra part will be positioned properly.  Also, the microwave will be replaced rather than fixed.
Thanks again for everyone's help!
Roni

We are currently sitting in the factory waiting area.  Aside from getting the microwave and rear view mirror/camera replaced and our Sani- con valve light fixed, we have decided to change out our day/night shades to the MCD shades.  We are excited about getting every thing taken care of at once.  Everyone has been very nice.

Roni,

Smart move on the MCD shades.  We think they are the best!
