Title: Remote door entry - F450
Post by: keelhauler on April 23, 2012, 10:39:29 am
I have been told that the F450 cutaway for motorhomes comes with the electronics to have a key fob remote.
The Ford manual tells how to program this remote if so equipped.

Key Fob remotes can be purchased for under $20 and then programed as per the Ford instruction manual.

So we are having a new 2552 built which will be ready in a few weeks, can anyone confirm that it is ready for a remote or if the 2012 remote is the same as the 2011 remote?  :help

Hopefully this vehicle does not have one of the new smart keys.  :)

There was a discussion on this topic last year.  If you click on search (above left), and enter remote door lock--you should be directed to the discussions.  If I remember right, the ford is wired for remotes but a ford dealer has to program/activate it.

Tried that search - did not work.
You don't need a Ford dealer. From pg 84 in the manual, instructions are clear.

Quote
To reprogram the remote entry
transmitters:
1. Ensure the vehicle is
electronically unlocked.
2. Place the key in the ignition and
turn from the 2 (lock) position to 3
(off).
3. Cycle eight times rapidly (within 10 seconds) between the 3 (off)
position and 4 (on). Note: The eighth turn must end in the 4 (on)
position.
4. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming
mode has been activated.
5. Within 20 seconds press any button on the remote entry transmitter.
Note: If more than 20 seconds have passed you will need to start the
procedure over again.
6. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that this remote entry
transmitter has been programmed.
7. Repeat step 5 to program each additional remote entry transmitter
(up to four transmitters).
8. Turn the ignition to the 3 (off) position after you have finished
programming all of the remote entry transmitters.
9. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming
mode has been exited.

Basic question is the F450 already equipped?
Is the 2012 remote the same as 2011 which I can buy key fobs for?

John

No. Unless, Kermit ordered the Ford with the door remote control unit. Most are ordered without it. I would call Kermit to make sure.

Gradygal is right on the money, atleast when it comes to 2010 E-450's.  I got two Ford fobs and went thru all the instrcutions in the book and had no luck.  Took it to Ford and they looked up the line (build) sheet and it specifically states that the keyless capability was not installed.  Ford recommended and aftermarket sysytem that they use in such applications, I did not go with it but the fobs looked just like the Ford OEM ones. There was talk that someone had their E-450 programmed before it left the PC factory by someone from Ford in Elkhart.  My dealer said they did not have the capabilities to get into the control module and make the software additions.  I am hoping the 2012's have the capability to have remote locks.  Thanks

I too had wondered if my 2007 was setup for key fobs.  But "No" as confirmed by PC-USA and Ford via the chassis VIN number.

I'll let everyone know what the final answer is but I think here is how it goes.

The latest Ford chassis have all the capability installed but the on-board computer is not programmed for remote door opening.
A dealer can program but this could cost you $100rds??

After the on-board computer is programmed then any key Fob remote can be programmed so that it opens the doors with the procedure listed above from the Ford manual.

We have had two PC's fobbed for remote access and locking.  The first was a 2010 2350 that we had programmed at the PC factory by a Ford Mech that PC had come over and do the programming.  He used a portable computer to do the programming.  I had just asked when we arrived at the Factory about the remote entry and Stuart called the Ford Mech.  When we traded in our 2350 for the new 2552 we asked to have the remote programming done before we arrived to pick up the coach.  The 2350 was on the E350 chassis and the 2552 is on the E450 chassis.  I do not know if it was the luck of the draw, but both chassis's were programmable.  There is no security system except for the panic button on the remote.  To get a security system you have to go to an after market program.  It cost us $100 to do the programming and have two fobs.  Good investment.

I just got an email from Stuart; the remote entry with fobs cost $250.00.

I'm not sure of the allure of a genuine FoMoCo part, but since you already have the electric actuators on your door locks, there are a number of aftermarket devices that will allow you to add remote entry for less than a hundred dollars for the hardware.  Check it out on eBay to get an idea of what's out there.
