Title: How to make the screen door more visible
Post by: Amsoilman on January 01, 2025, 03:04:36 pm
My dog has a hard time seeing the screen and runs into it quite often. Has anybody painted a decal or something visual on the screen so they could see it?

We installed a dog crate divider in front of our screen when we have the door open so the dogs don't run into the screen.  It works great for our two standard poodles.  We installed hooks on both sides of the door open so the divider is quick to set into place whether you are inside of the RV or doing it from the outside before you close the screen.  We could provide you with a picture of it if you think that would work for you.

I’m leaning toward spray, painting a stencil on the screen so that it’s always there. Just kicking around ideas. Thank you for your suggestion.

Amsoilman, let us know how that works out for you. I've been toying with the same idea, but unsure how to do ot effectively.

In our Phoenix Cruiser, the problem was eliminated by using yarn.  The same as used for knitting.  Intertwine the yarn with the screen to form an image.  We have a face outlined that is about six inches in diameter.  Placed at about eye level, and although the image isn't close to being a hologram, it adds a third dimension to the screen.

The yarn figurine has been in place for two years and has neither interfered with the screen operation nor needed to be replaced/

I believe that spray pain is your only option.  The screen has to be able to roll back into the side and putting even paper on it could easily cause you worse problems.

Don't forget, dogs can't see colors you can see https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-colors-do-dogs-see/#:~:text=With%20the%20filter%20on%2C%20you,colors%20your%20pup%20can%20perceive.

White is the best color.

The other option, keep the dogs on a leash when you bring them in.  Open the screen, then let them off the leash to go in.

He one thought that comes to mind is to choose a paint made for cloth or for plastic so that you don't dissolve the screen.

Not sure how costly or involved it might be to change the screen material but they make white screen for screen doors (probably other colors in case you're into black lighting and other effects LOL). Not sure how much visibility that might deprive the humans. Would probably be the most professional looking option.

I've thought about this is many times and  never get around to it. So far I've used the baby door barrier solution but it's a pita.

If you're considering replacing the screen fabric color, there is a YouTube Video "How to Rescreen a StowAway Retractable Screen Door" that gives Step by Step Instructions.  According to the video, there is an End Cap that contains the screen reel.  The procedure appears to be as simple as working with Roller Blinds.  Finding colored screen fabric is a problem.

You can go on amazon and find magnet decorations for screen doors.  All sorts of fun ideas. I love it.  I have actually walked into the screen myself lol.

Do they stay on when the door rolls up? Got a picture?

I’ve heard that the decals or magnetic stickers don’t work so well. I just took a sewing needle with dental floss and made a pattern in the screen. I would post pictures if it was easy to do. Easy to accomplish with somebody inside and somebody outside.

I can attest to the durability of such a work around.  Did ours with colored yarn two years ago.

My wife likens the technique to embroidery. Depending on how creative you want and how much time to spare, the sewn image can be very artistic.

The screen operation is unimpaired and the image remains intact.

We disliked ours. reduces the width of the opening, somewhat awkward to open and had the dog issue.  Removed it and replaced it with $30 magnetic bug screen that parts in the middle.   Could not be happier with the results.  In and out easily even with hands full and no longer have to worry about a dog tearing it up.  YMMV
