Title: Clear coat peeling off the front cap.
Post by: TheLuvShack on April 24, 2022, 04:37:25 pm
2012 Model 3100.
I believe this is the clear coat peeling off the front cap. I was washing the roof when I noticed it. Damage extends from the roof down to the Diamond Shield.
What are my options to repair it?
If I don't repair it will I have more problems later on?

Wow, I never seen that depth of damage before.  It appears damaged by a fire.

If it is in-fact only paint failure, then having the entire B+ cap stripped & repainted seems a logical choice.  If the damage is limited to a very small area and you don't want to spend a lot of money, you could get creative, create a pattern, paint that section using the pattern as a template, flip the template, and repeat on the opposing side for intentional balance.

Ron,
This damage wasn't caused by fire. Could be sun damage after 10 years of outside storage.

I didn't mean to imply it "was" damaged by a fire, only that it "resembled" fire damage.  Sorry for any misrepresentation.

No problem Ron!
I'll contact the factory and get their opinion on how to proceed.

Welcome to club of blistering/clearcoat peeling.  The cap clear coat on my 08 is gone.  The shelf on the rear is gone (I recently painted).  AND now my hood is starting to peel.  Don't know how they prepped, but I don't think they did a good job.

My 2008 2551 has been suffering from this problem for a couple of years. My cap has been repainted but now the hood and the rear cap are suffering badly,   :'(

Here is a link to the front cap and the process to repaint.

My cap is shot.  The rear shelf I painted.  Now the clear coat on the hood is starting to come off.  I'm not sure what I am going to do about the hood.  Maybe paint the center section matte black.

Hello
With the EPA regulations on VOC's and the invention of water borne paints, something has got to be sacrificed. The longevity of a painted finish has decreased to due to these regulations.  Sorry to see this, it just means I am next in line. I will be looking forward to hearing your solution, this will help me make a decision when mine starts.

Very Respectfully
Lance

I contacted Diamond Shield. Unfortunately the warranty only covers the original owner. I emailed photos and DS quoted $795 to remove the DS from the front cap, hood and rearview mirrors. No guarantee that the paint would not be damaged. I decided to leave the DS as is. I had the cap repainted and clear coated on the sides and from the top down to the PC painted logo. Yes, a band-aid approach but it was all I was willing to spend at this time. Cost was $1500. It was difficult to find a body shop that had a large paint booth.

$1500 … that was a bargain.  Still burns no doubt
