Title: Propane fill round up.
Post by: Gixxerkid3 on April 16, 2022, 07:31:42 pm
So today I drove our baby all shined up and pretty to the local RV dealer to top off the propane. Only needed 4.5 gallons but when I went to pay, they charged me for 5.0 gal.  I asked what was going on and they said they round up/down to the nearest whole gallon.  I said “that is theft” and they offered to credit me the $1.50 back ($3.0gal), and I politely declined as I walked out.  Nowhere did it say that they utilized this process.  Needless to say, I will not return there.  This is a big dealership as well.  Not your “mom/pop” RV shop.
My question is, is this standard practice or not?

Many Menards have propane filling.  We utilize them a lot for our PC.

So do they round up/down on the gallons?  Or are you charged for what you get?

I've never seen round down. But I've also seen minimum fills. Here in Houston one place has an 8 gallon min fill... I was about 5.5 from full and got charged the entire 8.  Trust me... I left an ugly one star review in Google after I gave them a piece of my mind in person.  At about $4 per gallon that was almost a $15 over charge.

I have a few places (different destinations) I full up regularly and they charge exact... So I go back to them.

Thanks for that info.  Had they noted they round up, I wouldn’t have been so upset, but if they do this to every person, that’s quite the cash flow over time.

$3/gallon?  That's cheap!  It's about $4+ a gallon here in Colorado.

Yes, I have had minimum fills and/or rounded fills and/or exact fills.  And I will be real honest, $1.50 in the scale of life isn't worth ranting about.

You’re right, a $1.50 is nothing but that’s not the issue.  It’s paying for something you did not get.  Do that 100 times and that’s a fair bit of cash to the seller over time.   I just think the rounding up/down is just dishonest business.  Having to pay for something you didn’t get.  Anyway, thanks all for the comments.
