Has anyone have water enter their RV when draining the hot water heater?

That would not be normal, but I guess it might happen if you were sloped sideways toward the coach, still, it shouldn't. I know that is no help, but it's all I got.

This happened to me many years ago.
After draining the tank from the outside by removing the white plastic plug, I then proceeded to remove the 120V heating element (to replace it). To my surprise, about a half gallon of water came out. It turns out 1/2 gallon of water stays inside after a full outside draining. This is "by design" as confirmed by the tank manufacture Atwood, to prevent the 120V heating element from burning up if the RV is plugged in during storage and the switch for 120V operation is accidentally left on. I guess it makes a lot of boiling sounds as way to signal the owner of the oversight.
Freezing of the water inside does no harm.

The bottom of the cabinet (side) when you walk into the RV was swollen. I appears that the lower connection on the water heater had been leaking. Of course you can't see the leak because it's covered up. Anyway I drained the water heater to fix the connection. I ask the question originally to make sure my diagnosis was correct that it was NOT the draining, but in reality it was the heater leak.
Of course MDF is a sponge.

Inside that cabinet under the sink the front panel comes off removing a few screws so you can view the water connections, but you likely already know that.

2 lucky, Thanks for the info. And yes I found that out on my last trip a couple months ago when the Upper (inlet) connection was leaking. Yesterday I just made a complete new shelf for in that area as the original was puffed up as if it had mumps.

I presume you are aware that after draining the tank from the plug still leaves a gallon or so of water in the tank. Just be careful when removing that lower connection.
