Title: Tire chains
Post by: jhobbs on December 14, 2020, 09:07:20 am
Has anyone had any experience with tire chains on their PC?  We will be making several trips to a cabin in the mountains up some steep hills with possibility of ice.  There are multiple routes, so i'll explore and see if I can find a route that isn't as steep.  But if I can't, i'll probably get chains just in case.

I have not used chains for probably 50 years and never on an RV but my father-in-law used them on occasion with a van and they tore his wheel well and fender badly one time when a cross link broke.   That was with metal fenders and wheel wells.   I suspect fiberglass sidewalls would be even worse.

The few times I have used chains on a car... Not a fun ride.... Talk about driving on a washboard and rattling your teeth out!

Just saying.

Thanks.  I'll focus on finding a different route.

I've never tried them, but Autosocks are another option for short distance at slow speed.

Depending on Texas law and the thickness of ice you may want to at least check out studded tires.
