Title: Volunteer Job opening
Post by: 2 Frazzled on May 16, 2019, 07:34:39 am
Ashley National Forest is looking for day use hosts for their boat ramp areas ASAP. They said it's rafters, canoes and kayaks. https://www.volunteer.gov/results.cfm.

I'm mentioning this because we head up tomorrow to work their visitor center job for about six weeks and they said they were missing hosts for that job and I know a lot of you are kayakers.

"Forest Service will provide all supplies and a trailer pad with full hookups, and laundry facilities are available. Reimbursement for subsistence (if applicable) and official mileage to and from the work site are provided. Positions are available May through to September."

I forgot to mention that while reading up on the area, I found that it is a trophy trout destination. Now we don't fish so we didn't know such a"destination" existed but I know a lot of you DO fish so this area may be of interest even if you aren't interested in the volunteer position.

The pictures of Flaming Gorge National rec area and Ashley National Forest are gorgeous. We can't wait to get up there. Northwest Utah, here we come!

John and I just committed to working as interpretive hosts at the Red Canyon Visitor Center at Flaming Gorge rec area Memorial Day to Labor Day next year. We loved our short stint this year and are going back for the full season. It's a beautiful area with so much to do. Check it out online and maybe stop in to say hi if your travels bring you out that way.

No, we'll miss you in Utah. We will be up in the Black Hills at the travel club reunion in Spearfish SD by then. It runs September 20-25, 2020.

Before I get inundated with requests to sign up:
- Registration will open early next year. Volunteers are researching day tour and catering costs
- You have to be a member to attend. If you aren't a member and want to be, go to PhoenixCruiserTravelClub.org and sign up. We've waived club dues again this year so no cost to join.
- Once registration opens, Don't Delay! The 2019 Reunion filled quickly and had a waiting list (which we went through). So block out the time and sign up right away once the notice goes out.

Cancel that job. :(

They called us months ago and asked if we'd come back for the whole 2020 season. We said yes. Then we saw a new volunteer coordinator was coming on board so we emailed to make sure she had our contact info, confirm dates etc. and copied the manager that called us... we waited, waited, no response.

Finally got through today and they said all positions have been filled for visitor center BUT they need people to work the river (which they knew we didn't want). My guess is they were going to let us show up on May 15 and try to stick us in the other job. We told them it was OK, we'll find another volunteer job. Their answer was "it's kind of late for that and there's always a chance we'll have cancellations". Kind of ironic since we jumped in and covered them at the last minute last year when people canceled on them. They thanked us profusely for our flexibility and willingness to help last year, called almost a year in advance to get our commitment... and now...

I was just commenting to friends that I think it rude for volunteers to commit to multiple places to keep their options open then pick their favorite and cancel the others at the last minute. I didn't realize the parks would do the same. Bummer there.

So don't try to visit us at Red Canyon, we won't be there.
