Title: Generator runs but no power
Post by: jwg1199 on July 15, 2018, 09:22:27 pm
I went to exercise the genset in our 2018 2552 today. It fired right up but no electric power. I checked the inside breakers under the bed but no power. I couldn't find a breaker on the genset. Any suggests before I call Phoenix?

Thanks, John

Look in your Onan owners manual.  It is clarified there.  In our 11 year old Onan, the reset button is right there, very easy to reset......after you remove the Onan cover.

One word of advise to anyone removing the Onan cover.  Because the generator is behind a PC access door, it is easy to misalign the Onan cover when putting it back on.  Make certain the bottom of the cover rests in the Onan grove, not the PC framing, before latching the cover.  You don't want to loose your Onan cover.  It is important it be there for proper cooling air flow through the generator.

Reset switch on current Cummins-Onan model generators: (RV QG 4000)

1) Open the PC access door and drop it down
2) At the top of the green generator are two black levers with OPEN / CLOSE printed near them.  Move them to OPEN
3) Pull the panel toward you at the top using the levers, lift a bit and then slide it down to the ground. It has to slide down between the generator and the PC wall so it is a bit fussy.
4) Look for the YELLOW oil fill cap (Check the oil while you there)
5) Look left and down from the oil fill cap and you will see a black circuit breaker switch.  You are looking at the side of it, not the front so it is easy to miss.
6)  Make sure that switch is in the ON position.  That is toward you.  You might push it off and then back on just to be sure.
7)  When reinstalling the generator door panel double check that it is secured correctly and not loose.  Many stories on the internet of this door being lost with resultant poor performance and overheating as the cooling path is ruined without the door.

Besides the reset switch you should check at the ATS to see if the generator is actually working.  Locate the ATS and with a meter check for power at the inputs.  If you are NOT connected to shore power then with the generator OFF there should be no power.  With the generator ON there should be power at the INPUTS.

1) If there is power at the INPUTS and no power at the OUTPUTS with the generator running then the ATS is faulty
2) If there is no power at the INPUTS with the generator running check the reset switch on the generator
3) If that doesn't help call Phoenix
