Title: Nonresident of Indiana buying new P.C.from factory how are sales taxes paid?
Post by: jam4travel on June 28, 2018, 11:35:33 pm
I'm a resident of Texas and buying a new Phoenix Cruiser from the factory, and I will be registering the motor home in Texas, which State Collects my sales tax?

What other fees will the State of Indiana collect?

I assume I will get a temporary license tag/plate issued by Indiana-what is the maximum time period the temporary tags can be issued for?

Does Phoenix Cruiser process all the necessary paper work I will need?

Does anyone know exactly what the State of Texas requires to get motor home registered in Texas?

Any advise anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

 :help

I contacted Keith with Phoenix Cruiser, he told me they don't collect any sales tax or any other fees, and they would issue me a 45 day temporary tag.  Texas requires me to register my new motor home with them within 30 days of the date on the Bill of Sale/Final Build List Cost.   When I register my new motor home in Texas is when I will have to paid the Texas sales tax.

We live in Michigan and picked up our PC on June 11th. Phoenix did not collect any taxes or fees of any kind.  We did have a trade-in, so we took the plate off from it and put it on our new PC.  Keith gave us the necessary paperwork to carry with us to show that we had just purchased the unit and that we had transferred the plate.  He said that they do not collect any taxes, etc. when the unit is going to be registered in another state.  He then sent us all the necessary paperwork so we could register it in Michigan.  It took two weeks before we received that paperwork.

If you do not have a plate to transfer, I am not sure if they give you a temporary tag or if their is a fee for it.  I suggest giving Keith a call and ask him how they will be handling your situation.

We live in Michigan too. Just wait til you transfer those plates!   You’ll have to sell your youngest child !    That’s just this year, next it’s your dog, then your wife/husband, etc.  it’s nuts!

In Tennessee, sales tax is collected at the time of title application/registration and based on the sale document.  TN sales vehicle sales tax is currently 7%.

My tax bill last April was $9000 in Knoxville, TN on our new 2552.

In Colorado, sale tax is also collected when you register the RV. I agree with the sticker shock when you renew the registration the following year. Ours was $1511! Quite a shocking change from the sub $200 charge for our 20 year old previous RV.

We transferred the plate from our 39' Class A DP. So, we knew what the plate fee would be on the PC, before going in to the Secretary of State's office. It was no surprise to us. Not too different than what we had been paying. Though, we could see where people would be a bit shocked, if it was their first motorhome.

You comment about sales tax is pretty clear, BUT...do I understand correctly that Phoenix USA will NOT collect sales tax (Tennessee).  I'm glad I saw this so I will be prepared for a large cash outlay.

That is correct. PC USA will NOT collect TN sales tax. They will mail you the documents that you will need to take in to the TN DMV to pay the sales tax, get it registered (plates), and get a title.

Same in Florida, we picked up our 2552 in March and were given (not mailed) documents showing no sales tax collected along with a paper tag. I took a picture of the paper tag 'just in case' Murphy yanked on it. Paid the hefty sales tax at the DMV office in FL.

Be sure you have your vehicle insurance policy in force before you drive off the factory grounds!

we bought in Elkhart and paid tax when we registered in Florida. Easy enough. And we had insurance for the ride home already arranged.

Same here in Illinois.  We paid our sales tax to Illinois when registering our PC for Illinois title and plates at our local Department Of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

You should live in WA state and own a boat.  8-10% sales tax when you buy it, and 1/2% excise tax on fair market value each year when you register it.
RV's $50-100 a year, thats it.   Cant take it with you.

But, no state income tax

So in Washington there is an annual fee or is it just the registration fee?  I am trying to figure out what it would cost to keep our RV in Washington but their website keeps running me in circles.

The excise tax is only on watercraft.  RV's run $50 -$100 a year for registration last I heard.

JATRAX

You may want to check out this "use tax" info...especially coming from Oregon, no sales taxes.  I got hit with this when I moved from NJ 20 years ago
on one of our cars.  Had to pay the difference of 6% NJ sales tax and 8% WA sales tax.  Very confusing as to how they collect...if I recall it was at time
of registration in WA.
