Title: kayak or boat?
Post by: mciai2000 on September 26, 2010, 09:29:10 pm
Hi y'all.

Considering purchasing kayak or inflatable boat to take on trips with us. Does anyone do this or have any input?

I have done a fair amount of white water kayaking in my younger days. I will not take a inflatable kayak for nothing. They are not responsive at all. A friend of mine had two collapesable kayak. There are so many parts to assemble, I think it is a pain in the butt as well. Also they take up so much room, it is not easy to transport them.

I ponder for quite a while before I bought a inflatable paddle board a couple of months ago. I think it present the same problem as the inflatable kayak. They are not responsive enough. The main reason I bought it is because of transportation issue. I figure next year when I get a toad, I will carry a real kayak and paddle board on top of the toad.

This does seem to be the only practical solution.....kayak/canoe/boat on top of tow vehicle.

Phoenix Cruiser owners are not the only RVers challenged with this.  The big rigs have the same issue.

On this years trip, I saw several motorhomes with a folding boat hanging on the side of the motorhome. I have seen ads for these "Porta Botes", but don't know anything about them. Maybe someone else on here knows about them.

Here is a link to the boats web site: http://www.porta-bote.com/index.htm

Put a rack on top and carry a canoe and/or a kayak.
Easy to get on or off.

There used to be a fold up/take apart canoe sold or advertised by National Geographic.  I owned one in the '70s.  It was great....waterproof and folded to about 6/4,  The name is pronounced fo boat....do not recall the spelling.......hope this helps send you in a successful direction

John:

Thanks for the reply. I went to your website.  Nice!! What bars did you use to install your rack?  How much does your canoe weigh?  It can not be too much or else it would  be too hard to get up top.  What brand are you using?

Thanks.
