Title: How Much Are You Towing
Post by: JoeyD on June 03, 2016, 11:45:19 am
I am going from towing a 2,600 pound Jeep Wrangler to towing a 4,000 pound Jeep Trailhawk.  To be honest, I'm a little nervous about towing this through the hills and small mountains along Rt 81 through West Virginia, Virginia and Pennsylvania.  How much are you toing with your PC and do you have any struggles.  Thank You

We tow the trailhawk without any problems. We took it to Colorado two years ago through the mountains. We towed a JeepLiberty for years before that. I have been using a PC on a Ford E450 since 2010.

I tow a 2014 Trailhawk up and down I-81 from above Scranton to Roanoke with our 2016 PC 2351 on a 450 chassis and have never had a problem. I do have a good brake system. Only the slightest tail wag but not enough to start spending money on. Go for it!,,

Hi Judi, We leave on June 24th and stay at the Savanah KOA the 1st night on our way to NH.  I will not travel through DC, Baltimore etc.  I love going to Richmond and take RT 64 to 81 into Scranto then on to NH via 84.

Hi Ron/Toni... That is the route I take on my way to NH/Maine.  When I towed my Wrangler up the "hills", I never had to go to lower gears. Thanks for the good news.

Jeep makes two Trailhawks--Renegade which is much smaller and Cherokee. Which are you towing?

I tow my Cherokee Trailhawk behind my 3100S with no problems.  It tows much better compared to my Liberty diesel that was a very heavy little bird at about 4500 lbs.  for the record I just had the new wire harness installed on the TH today.  This is the recall/TSB for front end warble.  Technician said it was a pain, the switch is in the console and has a nice safety switch.  You do have to follow a  sequence or you will set the check engine light, etc. off according to the instructions.

Our last trip I towed our Wrangler in our enclosed trailer.  No problem through hills all the way up to Bar Harbor from NJ.

We tow a Ford Edge, which is fairly heavy at almost 4300 lbs.  We've taken it cross country over quite a few different types of roads, including steep mountainous stretches (like over the Sierras) without much of a problem.  The steepest portions kept our max speed at about 40 mph or so going uphill, but that is really the only time I notice I'm towing anything.

We tow the Subaru Forester behind our 2552. We are full time when on the road so it has gear inside it as well as gear loaded in a hard case roof top carrier (which undoubtedly causes extra drag). We also have the Swing Daddy bike rack on the back of the Subaru loaded with two bikes. I don't know what the weight of all that is, but it's up there.

We're the same as PAX going up steep inclines, some slow down but not extreme. We crossed Kansas in strong cross winds and our friends following behind said the Subaru was all over the place, back and forth in the wind but I never felt it.

We have no problem towing and usually don't know the car is back there.

the new Jeep Renegade can be towed but only models equipped with the smaller of the two engines that allows for  standard shift.  The lager engine only comes with the new 9 speed automatic and can not be towed four down.  The Cherokee has the same transmission but has a different PTO setup that does allow it to be towed.  Thanks, Ron G.

I have a Veloster on a Demco dolly , about 3700#. Tows fine in the hills and mountains.  I wouldn't worry, you should  be ok, be sure you have a good braking system for the toad.
