Title: Pros and cons of a generator
Post by: JJCruiser on May 26, 2016, 06:06:43 pm
Our current PC 2350 does not have a generator.  We often thought it would be great to have one giving us more freedom from needing to plug in when we camp (especially when we need AC).  Having never had a generator in our RVs, we can't say we truly know the real hassles of having one.  How reliable are they?  How difficult is it to change the oil and do maintenance?  Is there anyone that has a generator that never uses it or wishes they did not have one?

I don't know where to start... Every RV we have had has always had a generator and I can't imagine not having one. There is little or no maintenance.  I have it serviced once a year at a cost of $32. Living here in Florida, I look at my RV as a second home on wheels in case of a weather emergency.  One time last year we were without electric for a day.  I just got the RV, started the gen and put food in the frig and slept in it.

Although some don't approve, I sometime run the generator while traveling in the south so I can run the AC.  Even if not running while traveling, it is great turning it on when you stop for lunch so that you can warm something up in the microwave.

Lots of reasons to have one.

We have had three motorhomes without a generator and four with a generator over 35 years of rving.  I can summarize, be short and be simple:  we will never have an RV without a generator again.

Like Paul, had a 24' travel trailer without, now have the PC with. It is the only way to go. Offers so many more conveniences and maintenance is easy and inexpensive.

Always had a generator and agree with the other forum members.

I often don't have AC power and have solar power which works for everything except Microwave & A/C. Wouldn't be without it.

Maintenance issues = You MUST run once a month, even in storage, to prevent carburetor clogging. No reliability problems.

Well it appears unanimous, a generator is the way to go.  Our next RV will definitely have one.  Thanks for everyone's input!

If your going to store your PC for any time simply add stabil to your gas and you will not have to run your gen every month. By doing this I have even left one of my bikes which is over 30 years old and four carbs sit for close to a year, Fired right up, no muss no fuss.

Just add to your gas before topping off your fuel tank and run your gen a bit before storage to ensure the stabil additive has gone thru.  I don't have the time nor the desire to run my gen every month when its stored.

JJ,

It never hurts to call the factory and ask them what they would charge to install a new generator and wire it up for you.  You never know.  They might be able to do it, and maybe at a price you would consider.

Oh yes, I agree with the other comments.  We love having the generator.  Maintenance is a breeze too.
