Title: Lighted grab bar by the door
Post by: jfcaramagno on September 02, 2015, 06:51:54 pm
Our lighted grab bar isn't. Lighted, that is. The bulb is fine and a new bulb also doesn't light. My VOM says there is no voltage with the porch light on (I assume the bar lights with the porch light). Any ideas where I should look?

Thanks.

John

In our 2012 2551 the grab bar light always comes on with the porch light.

I replaced our porch light this year and there was only one pair of wires connected to it.  It was wired with one pair of wires from the switch to the grab bar and then from the grab bar to the porch light.  The factory may have changed by running two pairs of wire one to the grab bar and then another to the porch light and then both terminating at the switch.  You could call the factory to see if there are two separate wires run or just one.

I would remove the switch inside the PC and make sure there are no wiring or switch problems.

If the porch light comes on and the switch looks good I would check the socket in the grab bar for a problem.  If the porch light does not come on then I would check for a blown fuse.

I took the switch apart and found only one pair of wires attached. That means the grab bar must be powered from the same wires that power the patio light. I tried to take the patio light apart but it seemed to be glued to the wall and I didn't want to break it trying too hard. So I took the grab bar apart again and looked at the pair of wires going to the light bulb. There were two butt connectors wedged into a hole in the wall, so with few options I pushed one of the connectors back into the hole and the light came on.  2o2  I don't usually believe in magic, but it works now. Go figure.

Sound like one off the butt connectors has a loose connection, meaning the butt connector didn't get crimped good enough, which also means you will most likely have the same problem again.

I don't doubt something has come loose if the patio light comes on.  I changed my bulbs to LED for both.

What LED did you use for the grab bar?

What LED did you use for the grab bar?

It was a 194 type bulb mounted at the top section of the handle.
