Title: 2551 Sofa Modification
Post by: desert340 on January 25, 2015, 12:03:25 pm
We have a 2008 2551 Cruiser.  After sitting on the factory installed sofa/bed for a few trips we realized that it was time for something more comfortable.  We removed the sofa along with its mechanism and replaced it with a custom built sofa made at RV Décor in Yuma Arizona.  The custom fit (54") sofa is great, comfortable and there is additional storage under the seats.  This should be an option at the factory, not the uncomfortable sofa/bed that was installed.

That looks really nice.  We replaced ours in our 2551 with one that looks very similar.  Enjoy your new sofa.

We like the sofa in our 2013 2552 but I suspect it is different than those installed previously. Ours is actually two memory foam seats that recline individually with the touch of a button. I think it is the same sofa they are putting in now. I also think the sofa style is determined by the space so if you get a slide and pantry, the sofa is smaller. Same goes for the dinette- Ron Ditmer has a wider dinette because he has no slide. It's still a trade off.

That said, that's a beautiful sofa you found!
(And I'm jealous of the drawers)

2 Frazzled is right.  The factory has switched the couch a number of times that I know of since 2007, from the jackknife sofa, to the air bed sofa, to another sofa, to the current-day split recliner sofa with memory foam.  All flavors offer full sleeping accommodations for two adults.

I have no personal experience with any of them since we have the dinette without a slide out, but I read here that the current day recliner memory foam couch has everyone saying nothing but good things.

The sofa in our 2011 model 3100 sofa opens with the push of a button and has the air bed.  We’ve only used the air bed a few times, and it worked just fine, quite comfortable.  The sofa is very comfortable – my wife uses it to watch TV while I use the recliner.  The great thing about this bed is the storage below which is terrific, see pic.  Don’t know what we’d do without it.

I think that air bed sofa GoPhoenix has is the only one PC ever offered with storage.

If you need a lot of storage, a couch can't compare to the bench seats of a dinette.  But the dinette in many models require a no-slide-out situation.  A dinette inside a slide out of a 2350 and 2551 will be very confining, so ridiculous that I wonder if Phoenix discontinued it due to customer complaints.  But a dinette in the slide out of a 2351 and 2552 is quit a nice situation for the wall space is available.

In our older 2350, we have a dinette but we don't have a slide out so there is adequate wall space to accommodate it.  Without the box of a slide out, the cabinets above get much larger.  You get a glimpse of the over-head cabinets in this picture.

Decent Leg Room & Tons Of Bench Storage (no drawers, just big cavities)

Our dinette can't compare to the comfort of a couch for extended relaxation, nor accommodate for 2 adults sleeping, but it works better for the two of us considering the conveniences a dinette offers.  The memory foam cushions we upgraded help immensely, and we are good at sharing the recliner behind the passenger seat.  Everyone has their own priorities which is nice Phoenix accommodates.
