Title: Any good recommodations on traveling to our Colorado reunion.
Post by: frecklestweety on July 09, 2014, 10:12:37 pm
Since I have never travel west before, thinking of travelling out on Interstate 70 eventually  from Pa thru the states and don't know what there is to see on the way.  Planning on coming back via I-40 to PA.  It all depends on the weather also as the best way.   How much time should I allow.  I was thinking to leaving the last week of August and taking my time.   So any suggestions from seasoned campers who might have travelled this way.

Recommend Army Corp of Engineer campground on the south shore of Lake Wilson Kansas.  Just 7 miles off I70 and great sites with views of lake.

About 2 exits east of the Junction City, KS exit on I-70 is highway 177. Go south  on 177 about 25 miles to the Council Grove, KS ACOE Campgrounds. There are 3 entrances off 177; Richey Cove, Kit Carson Cove Park and Kansa View Park.
Have lunch or dinner at Hays House, downtown Council Grove. As best I know, there are over 20 historic landmarks in that little town. Very quaint and we liked it a lot.

You'd be smart to Google better directions.

Enjoy your adventure and be safe (there are a lot of crazies on the roads).

A big  2o2 on both the recommendations above in Kansas. Been to both of them. Wilson lake is beautiful. Council Grove is in the Tallgrass area of the state. Lots of old west history there, and the COE reservoir is a good place to stop. Excellent laundromat there in town if needed.
Hays Kansas is a nice small college town to check out the downtown area. Victoria Kansas has a beautiful cathedral just off of I70 to check out.

Thanking everyone for their advice but due to unfortunate circumstances here at home I had to cancel out of the reunion.  Very disappointing but there is next year.   Hope everyone travels are safe and the reunion a success.
