Those Two Screws In The Middle Of The Entry Door Threshold

My main entry door threshold had two white painted screws that didn't screw into anything.  They just sat in the holes.  Does anyone else have the same?

I pulled them out and felt inside with an awl, trying to locate the solid material they were supposed to screw into.  I had no luck, so I got my drill out to drill holes into that material 1/2" below.  To my surprise it was solid steel.  I kept drilling until I got through it, which wasn't bad.  I got out my tap and die set, cut threads in the holes, and screwed new strong machine screws in those two threaded holes.  Now the base of the door frame is solid with the RV frame.

During our trip this month, I see I have a 3rd screw with the same demema.  It wasn't there before.  Standing outside looking in, it is the bottom-left screw on the side wall.  I wonder if the screws are actually shearing off with vibration as they appear to have the tips cut-off.

I will be locating high strength hardened steel screrws for all replacements.  Hopefully they will be strong enough for the application.

Ditto for the exact 3 screws mentioned on my 2008 2551.  Mine were sheared off & I found the remaining pieces still tapped in to the metal the door frame was mounted on.  Will have to get the pieces out & put in some stronger screws.

BTW - the more I read on the forum the longer my PC "honey-do" list grows; but its all good & the mods/fixes only serve to increase my sense of security at properly maintaining the unit.  Thanks again all!

I didn't know the screws to nowhere were there until I inadvertently ripped my fingers open on them.

As I mentioned before, those screws to nowhere did go somewhere until they sheared off.

I have been tempted to add 3 more threaded screws in-between the two already there.  I am concerned my two larger replacement screws may also give out over time.

I had the same entry door threshold screw problem when I had a 2007 2700.  So far, there is no problem with the threshold on my 2010 2350, but 4 screw heads have sheared off on the front left bottom of my pushout.  I now pay closer attention to screws, bolts and other fasteners during my post trip inspections.

During this season's 4 week vacation out west, I noticed that our threshold's two thicker stainless replacement screws both broke.  Being that stainless is a softer metal, it is not a total surprise.  I did hope that since they were thicker than the original screws, they would last forever.  They did last 6 years.  Unfortunately I can't find more of that same nice looking finish stainless screw.  So I temporarily used hardened steel.  Unfortunately they are hex-headed, not exactly a finished look, but at least they are low profile.  Hardened steel will be stronger but might snap under stress as well, and would be very hard to drill out.  I'll have to look around for even thicker stainless screws with nice finish heads resembling the ones that just broke.

Thanks for the heads-up.   We will be checking ours.   

The only problem we have now is one of the overhead light fixtures isn't working.   It's not burned out bulbs as we hoped.

Well I did find bigger stainless screws, tapped bigger threaded holes, and one more PC task checked off.

My focus this winter season has been redirected to converting family VHS & DV recordings to MP4 files that date back to 1983.  I bought Elgato from Walmart for ~$80 and it is working out very nicely with my 2 year old HP Envy laptop, Windows 8.1.  Eight hours of VHS is roughly 37gig.  Elgato is very easy to use and to trim the beginning & end of each recording.
