When Was The Last Time You Checked Your Roof A/C Cover?
« on: October 09, 2017, 08:05:36 am »
I was on the roof cleaning our PC from our recent trip out west.  When washing the Dometic a/c unit, I noticed one of the 4 special screws that mount the cover was missing.  The other 3 needed a bit more tightening.

I advise to check them once a year or two depending on how much you use your PC and a/c unit.  I assume they work them self loose from the vibration.

These are the special screws, but my a/c unit requires only 4 of them.
Camping World sells them HERE.  Part number of a pack of 8 as pictured is 3310724.004
Price including shipping for me was $12.27

Good suggestion Ron!  I have not lost a screw yet but when I did my inspection after our trip home from the factory one screw was out and by some miracle laying right there on the roof.  Put it back where it belonged and snugged up the others.
I have added checking those screws to my pre-departure checklist.

WARNING!

My order was waiting for me when I returned home last night.  Camping World shipped ONE screw, not eight, in a box the size of a shoe box.  I ordered the number given up higher but my paperwork from Camping World says I ordered 3308261.001 which is ONE screw.  I called and they are trying to make it right.  Their system needs some IT cleanup.   I should have bought the pack of 8 screws on ebay HERE for $2.48 less with shipping considered.

You got real lucky there jatrax  :)

The screw head works with a Philips screw driver and also a square drive.  I highly recommend using the square drive to torque the screws so much better.  The Philips doesn't grip well at all, maybe meant for emergency use only.

Agree with the square drive, mostly I prefer square drive for woodworking and general use.  However, caution must be taken when working with plastic as it is quite easy to strip if too much torque is applied.  In some cases an easily stripped Philips head can actually be a blessing:)

I was a little surprised to see the screws attaching the A/C cover.  Considering the vibration and danger if the cover comes off on the road I would have thought a vibration proof latch of some sort would be a better design.  But what do I know.  (WH)

Like you, I feel 4 such screws seems to be the wrong fastener, or maybe okay if using 8 of them .  Best to use standard machine screws with fender washers and nylon lock nuts.

Camping World shipped me just one more screw.  Now I need 6 more.  Hopefully they will ship me all 6 in one shoe box this time.
