Fixing rusted entry way

I am bout to tackle the rust around the bottom of the entry door. In earlier post I found some good answers to this problem. I am wondering if the screen door is removable.

I have removed the lower track and know it is held in place by three screws and can be removed rather easily.  I have not removed the upper track but mine looks like it is mounted in the same way.  As far as the screen portion is concerned, it looks to be held in place by two of the same screws that hold the upper and lower track in place but I would call the factory to confirm this.    I did find it a little tricky to replace the lower track.  Take your time and it will go back into place.

When I look at the picture of the rust it looks as if the center brace for the awning may have caused some of the paint on the step to chip off.  On our 2008 2350 I always made sure the tip of the brace was not resting on the step during travel.

What we found on our doorframe was that it looks like someone closed the door prior to applying the weather stripping and it chipped the powder coating.  This is what seems to have caused our rust.

If in doubt a quick call to the factory would verify the removal process.

Thanks Barry, I went out and looked at the screen door, I noticed a snap on plastic  cap on both top and bottom runners and two end caps on the tube.  Once I finish my re caulking job that is my next project.  I would like sand the whole area down and paint it with Chasis Saver, and then a coat white Rust O Leum. I believe Ron Dittmer did it this way.  Afterward I'll glue in some carpet pieces under the awning tools, or add carpet to the area held down with velcro strips for easy removal.

I did see in another post that gradygal (George) was thinking of adding rubber gasket onto the bottom of the entry door and removing the gasket piece just inside.  I would like to do that as well, the gasket is a dirt trapper and I'd like to see it gone.

Bill, I found the "exploded diagram" for the Stowaway Retractable Screen Doors here: http://www.stowawayretractablescreendoors.com/images/techpdfs/StowAway%20Exploded%20Diagram.pdf - it was too big of a file to attach but I downloaded to my user manual file for future reference. I couldn't find installation instructions online as they apparently only sell to "certified installers". There also isn't anything in our user manual stack from Phoenix, so this is the best I can find. Hope it helps. John and I wish you the best of luck. If we tried to take ours apart, the only one left standing would be the cat. There would be blood, random tools, screen bits and two bodies. We do so admire those with mechanical skills.

Let us know how you got the caps for the mounting screws out.

I managed to get both tracks removed. With the caps removed there are three screws holding them to the frame. Top screw came out no problem, bottom screws were badly rusted and frozen, not even a screw extractor wold remove them, so I drilled them out.

On the housing, the top cap screw has nut on the end, located inside between the frame and the padded shroud, just enough room to get a box wrench in there.  The bottom cap screw is rusted like the tracks were, I can not tell right now if it has a nut on it, it was getting dark and I tried finding it by searching up behind the step, That will be my first thing to do this morning.  I will be careful once I remove the bolt, according to the diagram provided by Holly this contains the spring.

This job so far taught me a hard lesson.  Monthly or at least twice a year this system needs attention. The build up of debris between the track and door frame was amazing.

So, today I can clean, sand and paint.

I've noticed on the newer PCs that the screen door has a more rigid frame then the one on my 2008. I'm curious if I could purchase that style door for my MH.   I am going to Indiana next Friday.  .

A new screen door or an upgrade to the 2450?????

Old screen door is out.  Phoenix will be installing the newer upgraded model  at the factory next  in a week.

Bill, that extra foot on the 2450 might give you enough room to take the kitties along. They would stop yowling after the first 24 hours then rule the castle with two servants to feed them on demand 

Thanks for posting that diagram.  I would like to move the handle on mine as it's in a bad spot....can't lift or lower the counter extension with the screen door closed.  I looked at the handle but couldn't see how it was attached.  Now I know.  :-)
